The unique call of the congregation has challenged the church to respond to new needs and problems at the end of the twentieth century. The project is a study of the special role of congregations and the unique relationship between the social sciences and theology. It includes an overview of literature available on consultation, conflict and community and an analysis of two processes of intervention: 'shalom-building' and 'bridgebuilder.' Four case studies illuminate the two intervention processes. It posits the paradox that people yearn for relationships (connections) with others yet keep themselves out of relationship (disconnected) because of hurtful past experiences. Case presentations show how key concepts of object relations theory--transference, countertransference, the unconscious, and resistance--can be reframed in a relational context to enable authentic and growth-fostering connections for both client and therapist. The author interviewed ministers who began D.Min. programs in pastoral counseling. He compares interview data with the theology of Douglas John Hall and the psychology of Heinz Kohut. He concludes: a minister who enters a program of therapy training is responding to self crises and/or crises of meaning. The action-research model was used to compile information relative to this ministerial issue. Surveys were sent to district superintendents, district presbyters, and twelve working pastors of the Oklahoma district. The purpose of the surveys was to determine what the working pastors were thinking. The hypothesis was that not much is being done to assist the working pastors in dealing with their frustrations. It develops a ten part preaching-teaching curriculum series based on the Lucan texts from Cycle C of the Revised Common Lectionary.
