However, the metaphors of the first four centuries have dominated. These metaphors reflect patriarchal, priestly and platonic worldviews, which are being challenged in this post-modern era. These metaphors also fail to reflect the diverse imagery and thought of the Bible. Alternative metaphors are widely used in scholarship. Yet, worship, traditional or contemporary in style, continues to be shaped by these anachronistic and partial metaphors for Jesus. Personal stories from the church's members revealed a confusion of Christian identity, an absence of cohesion, and lack of esprit de corps, not unlike many mainline Protestant congregations. The emphasis was upon supplementing conventional components of stress-management by allowing spirituality to influence perception of untoward events. the bias is that each individual possesses a spiritual core, and therefore, any effort to manage stress minus such an emphasis is truncated, and with limited effectiveness. The relational nature nature of the concepts of imago Dei and compassion provide theological justification and sufficient grounds for a nonsectarian approach in a secular environment. The project thesis answered the question in the affirmative: 'Restorative Justice's Family Group Conferencing is a practice of shalom.' The project was to test the thesis. This was done in two ways: (1) by comparing the author's study of shalom with Family Group Conferencing, and (2) by a theological committee of shalom experts' evaluation of Family Group Conferencing. The shalom experts represented theologians from world religions where shalom is an important concept: Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. Both the author's study and the theological committee's evaluation of Restorative Justice's Family Group Conferencing agreed that Family Group Conferencing is a practice of shalom. Over a six week period the author explored the retirement experiences of nine retired clergy. The design of the sessions included the components of Groome's shared Christian praxis. A continuous assessment method was used to track the spiritual needs of clergy identified in the sessions. The author concluded that retired clergy need the support of the church during the developmental transition into retirement. The thesis of this project is that the shared praxis approach can be a catalyst for congregational leaders to discern God's will. During an eight-week workshop based on the shared praxis approach, congregational leaders prayed, read scripture, meditated,and discussed what it meant to seek the kingdom of God in the hope of discerning God's will for the congregation's corporate mission and direction.
