From the earliest times, the church has struggled with its unity as a 'body'. The twentieth century church is rocked by the growing number of schisms in many congregations.  Dr. mcGahey has served one such congregation trying to pick up the pieces of a major division.  Through the use of personal interviews and questionnaires, mcGahey has tried to evaluate the situation of his congregation.  He has tried to build a sense of unity through a 150th anniversary celebration, to affirm the ministry of his people.  The result is a reawareness of our own need to see ourselves as God's people, not our own. Additionally, there are strategies for a Joint Merger Committee, the Presbytery and the Session prior to the merger.  The author interviewed 65 members in 16 Presbyterian churches that merged in six different Presbyteries located in western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and the Panhandle of West Virginia.
