There were twelve couples in attendance, four already married between 6 months and thirty years and eight unmarried couples. The couples already married enjoyed sharing and caught some of the enthusiasm from the couples preparing for marriage, while the unmarried couples enjoyed the mix as well. The author believes that the marriage rite best expresses the theology of marriage in the Orthodox Church, and makes a very good 'text book' for marriage preparation. During the retreat, we began with an introduction offering an Orthodox vision of marriage, followed by a line by line study of the rite. Communication skills were also taught, using the theology expressed in the rite. However, employing questionnaires directed toward a group of engaged couples and a group of married couples, the author has established a basis for couple-centered preparation for marriage.  Most couples in the sample believe that such preparation is important; they are eager to state their needs and desires concerning marriage preparation.
