Three such theological presuppositions are isolated. The five novels were read and discussed by a group of laypersons who had difficulty in perceiving Updike's theological intent. The study concludes that while the works of Updike help provide meaning for preaching, they are no panacea for the preaching task. The study concludes that the church's scriptures provide the foundation for preaching and that story is a rich resource to relate to the life situation of hearers of preaching."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719632410509312,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:53:10.162Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:24:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:03:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"23ea23dd-cdcc-495c-9ac3-434ffa234a97","accessControl_ssim":["a0a1a570-b8a5-4578-a0c0-e898975bdee0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The literature of change: an approach to the fourth gospel through current science fiction"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:24:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:11:35Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["addc619f-a9f3-462c-b755-18732154f47a"],"hasLease_ssim":["ebbb904e-ff3c-4607-bf1e-9e6a2a3ed60a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Willis E McNelly"],"year_tesim":["1985"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert Dean Knapp"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Miller, Walter M, 1923-1996","Religion and literature","Dick, Philip K","Le Guin, Ursula K","Narration (Rhetoric)","Herbert, Frank","Bible. Science fiction deals with the impact of technological change; gospels with the impact of theological development. Not equal but parallel genres, each seeks change in the reader's life through changing the perception of the world. Miller's 'A Canticle for Leibowitz', Leguin's 'The Word for World Is Forest', Herbert's 'The Dragon in the Sea', and Dick's 'The Man in the High Castle' are compared with the gospel's narrative function and its impact on the reader's life. Conclusions show students' improved understanding of the gospel."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716535610114048,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:03:56.823Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:23:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-10T21:48:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"20991945-6a69-4cca-9bbe-bb101064655e","accessControl_ssim":["eab5d4f0-c085-46ba-bd12-f879a73cb443"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A critical exploration of John Updike as American theologian"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:23:43Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-10T21:48:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1087adbe-b73f-4bd6-8a48-d5eade8c4e1f"],"hasLease_ssim":["8bd28637-8655-47e1-aab7-6620eaf22347"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Earle Stibitz"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Duane P Lanchester"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Religion and literature","Narrative theology","Updike, John, 1932-2009","American literature"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation/project contains a handbook for a self-guided study of three representative Updike novels, The Centaur, Couples, and A Month of Sundays. After an introduction to Updike's style, concerns and theological positions, the author helps the reader make a detailed explication of the novels so the reader can experience the theology found in them. Updike's theology--which is experienced rather than stated overtly--is useful in a culture which doubts dogmatics.
