This dissertation begins with a study of the small church, a study of why it is as it is, a theological and biblical study of ministry, and an examination of other training models for small church leadership.  A complete training model for lay ministers based upon the above discussion is outlined. Nine United Methodist congregations ranging from 500 to 999 members were studied. A 110-item questionnaire surveyed 239 clergy and 261 laity with a 66 percent overall return.  Responses indicated that both clergy and laity are open to explicit faith healing within the church if approached from a rational, critical perspective.  It appears that explicit faith healing should be a part of the church's ministry.
