The author spent a month in the Middle East interviewing Muslims and Christians involved with the dying and related areas. The guidelines were field tested with responses. Lewis defended 'mere' Christianity, an understanding of the faith which was co-extensive with the ancient creeds; he resisted sectarianism and theological faddishness. Lewis's intellectual approach was augmented by a lifestyle which this thesis calls 'pastoral apologetics'. Through a study of relevant literature, a developed theology of change and the results of congregational surveys, the project discovers that failure to adapt is not due to fear of displacement, but to fear of the loss of church and neighborhood.
