Southside was an eleven year old, small rural church in western Tennessee, that had experienced fifty-eight deaths. Unprocessed grief bent the congregation in the direction of becoming a sanctuary church and a survivor church.  Death hit this church hard and grief overload was experienced. The program laid an infrastructure for workers, communicated the need, and recruited workers for ministry by assisting church members in overcoming barriers that hindered them from becoming involved.  Both scriptural teachings and motivational theories were considered when developing this strategy. Scripture was presented that demonstrated how men of faith often wrestled with fulfilling God's plan. The material will assist nurses in the recognition of and response to the spiritual concerns of patients. Chapter Two examined the theological and biblical dimensions of the spiritual care of patients.  Chapter Three presented a psychology of the spiritual care of the patient, focusing on the key role of the nurse. The emphasis was placed upon referral to the Department of Pastoral Care. Chapter Four described the process of assembling a Spiritual Care Notebook to serve as a resource for nurses and to be placed on each nursing unit at BHET.  The final chapter was an evaluation and conclusion of the project. The thesis is that there is a need for greater cooperation between the medical community and the church.  Screening and education performed in church stetting would be a help to both parishioners and doctors.  Questionnaires used revealed interest among clients and volunteers.  On that basis, a clinic was begun and observed for a period of two months.  The project demonstrated that health-related screening and education was of benefit to both medical and church communities. A focus group of eight members was enlisted to participate, including evangelism committee members, new Christians, new church members, and experienced leaders constituted the training group.  Chapter Two focuses upon historical and biblical examples of personal witnessing.  Using Christ as the model witness, one can learn how to be more effective sharing the gospel with clarity, confidence and compassion.  A suggested outline, entitled BRING OTHERS NOW, can be used.  Chapter Three discusses the context for the ministry project incorporating the results of demographic data related to the church and the surrounding area.  Chapter Four outlines the implementation of the witness training model. Twelve sessions of one hour each allow for small group discussion, personal study, and relationship building among team members. The nine workshops were designed incorporating biblical, sociological and psychological understandings of divorce.  Two test instruments were used in a pretest, post-test model to judge how much participants changed.  Progress toward a goal was judged by the participants' self-ratings. A worship planning committee was enlisted and trained to provide diverse worship services.  A questionnaire was developed to measure the congregational attitudes toward particular elements of worship. The conclusion included insights about present styles of worship prominent among Baptist churches. They were identified as the praise and worship, the liturgical, the traditional, the revivalist, and the seeker service. Chapter 2 briefly introduced two of Jesus' stories in Luke as a biblical storytelling model and surveyed the theological aspects of biblical storytelling. Chapter 3 explained that the human brain has a physiological structure and cognitive characteristics that enable the listener to maintain the essentials of the story for longer periods of time.  Story's role in human history, in both sociological and psychological aspects, was discussed here as well. Training of the Sunday School teachers, grounded on these findings, was described in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 shows how teachers themselves were instructed about the storytelling form as the biblical teaching method of faith. Chapter one introduced the project, providing background on the church and explaining the research methodology employed.  Chapters two and three were the heart of the project. Chapter two explored the biblical, historical and theological issues in worship. Two specific biblical texts (Isaiah 6 and John 4) were studied to consider the biblical call to worship.  Chapter looked at the contemporary worship scene, coming to the conclusion that a fresh approach to worship is needed today.  Chapters four and five outlined the actual work done in the project.  The four sermons and worship services, as well as the response of the church to them, were central.  The project concluded with an evaluation and assessment of lessons learned from the
