This project led students to develop an understanding of a theology of the cross along with its practical implications for their personal lives and for their own ministry opportunities. Since theology is itself a dialogical discipline, a small group of students was enlisted to study together a theology of the cross as well as how they could apply a cruciform theology throughout the Baptist Student Ministry. This project lasted for one semester and attempted to include all of the students that were involved in the Baptist Student Ministry Program. The majority of the work, however, was completed by a smaller, select group of students. A larger group of students were asked to evaluate the testimonies, devotional materials, and sermons prepared by the select group. The project goal is renewed zeal in church leaders to be involved in ministry. Project activities attempt to change attitudes and behaviors in the deacon body. Deacons will participate in joint ministry with a growing church in a similar ministry context. Deacons will assess the church's present ministry in a one-day retreat. Deacons' attitudes will be challenged through a survey of unchurched nonbelievers in the community. Deacons will examine biblical ministry mandates in a ten-week seminar. In the final two meetings, deacons will formulate plans for involving other church members in ministry, reflecting their changed attitudes and behavior in ministry. African-American ministers are not immune to these pressures. They face difficulties due to external racial conflicts as well as internal challenges from their congregations due to racial expectations. There is a breach in the ministry that some African-American ministers seem to have overlooked; it is their family. While it is clear that many African-American ministers and their families are walking with God and standing tall in their respective ministries, many are failing, causing a ripple effect in their churches, communities, and homes. He developed a strategy to aid the church in getting out of the plateau and to regain regional influence. The author concluded that plateaued churches can once again grow if the correct strategy is implemented.  The purposes of the project were to generate a new sense of direction and vision for specific areas within the church body that would aid it in regaining regional influence and to develop a tool to aid other churches in accomplishing the same goal.  A Creative Leadership Team (CLT), a nine-person visionary team consisting of a cross-section of individuals voted on by the church, prayerfully discovered the mission and vision of First Baptist Church-Longview during the strategic planning process. It made recommendations to the church for becoming a regionally influential congregation again. Focusing upon the importance of the biblical concept of 'koinonia,' the project will seek to create a positive atmosphere for the successful development of disciples in this congregation. Recognizing the importance of encouraging inactive members to comprehend their calling to become active disciples, the project will attempt to provide a model where such members are integrated into a setting that will promote their spiritual development. The project will focus on the Scriptural definition and purpose of 'koinonia' and propose strategic ways to develop such fellowship in the context of Sunday School. Encumbrances and obstacles that hinder a successful integration of both Sunday School and home cell groups will be addressed openly. As far as can be ascertained, such a model for revitalizing Sunday School through the use of home cell groups has not been offered.
