The purpose of this project was to discover factors that contribute to the resiliency and retention of missionaries who have gone through traumatic events in their missionary career in Africa and yet continue to serve there. This qualitative study used narrative methodology and involved 35 interviews with missionaries who had experienced various traumas. Four factors that respondents brought into their trauma event were: a strong personal conviction, a preparedness from birth, words from God, and sturdy relationships. Four factors which emerged from the trauma were experiencing the keeper side of God, hearing authoritative leadership voices, quickly finding new ministry foci, and benefiting from functional networks. Three unexpected factors from the trauma event were a less encumbered way of living, embracing sudden transitions as doors to new ministries, and a reshaped life for future ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717425019617280,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:18:05.030Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:54:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:01:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e509a8ee-1ee8-4cc5-9051-d29c674d8682","accessControl_ssim":["43888dc0-2994-4b59-bb48-90045bcde814"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Pulpit speech: a college-level course in verbal and nonverbal style for preaching"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:54:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:41:08Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f3cf62d6-6eec-4d73-884f-8a5f626cbb29"],"hasLease_ssim":["ec7514e4-7c7c-4eef-bbca-492d7c8451d9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["David L Larsen"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Dwayne C Morris"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Style, Literary","Nonverbal communication","Communication--Religious aspects--Christianity","Preaching--Study and teaching","Persuasion (Psychology)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Style is a biblically legitimate topic of study. A small sample of in-depth interviews helped the author gain a more thorough insight on how Brunswick Street Baptist Church is organized. From the research, the author concluded that a new model could be presented but because of the unknown, many were cautious and therefore the implementation of this new model should be done slowly and carefully. I, though, am ordained in the Evangelical Free Church. Much of the American church dwells in a culture that does not seek to deal squarely with death. The irony is that in this death-denying culture people at one moment deny death, and at the same time 'experience more deaths' through television, movies, and video games (in some of the new video games people seek to kill people at every turn) than any civilization in human history. We seek death in our entertainment, while at the same time we fear death's invasion into our lives. Life forces us to deal with the very thing we dread--death. We seek to place death in the realm of fiction until it comes in our door. In life, death controls the real story line. The American church rarely focuses on death. The church primarily deals with the subject of death at the time of death--the funeral. After the funeral we seek to return to normal life as quickly as possible, though death has removed normalcy forever for the family and friends of the deceased. The result is that most American Christians are ill prepared to face life's expected conclusion--either theirs, or their loved ones. The goal of my project is to help local churches present a Christian theology of death; to provide practical helps in discussing these issues in the church; and to teach church people to cope with death, dying, and grief from the Scriptures (this will be done in four seminars). The four seminars were presented to a local church and evaluated."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719437727694848,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:50:04.498Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:00:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:28:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0a78ede7-fbca-4f4d-8d0e-3a20793680d2","accessControl_ssim":["c13042ee-7091-4d24-9b19-d6b792eec843"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The personal and professional development practices of select senior pastors of large evangelical Protestant churches in the United States of America"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:00:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:24:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e23ccedc-5aed-4a86-aba7-daf35b7ce432"],"hasLease_ssim":["f78fcd9a-a453-41ca-8cec-857adf90dcf8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["David L Larsen"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gerald Dwight Gerald"],"keyword_tesim":["Clergy--Performance standards"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School of Trinity International University"],"subject_tesim":["Professional education","Clergy--Training of"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project investigated the personal and professional development practices of ninety-six senior pastors of large Protestant churches (i.e., in excess of 1,000 for weekend services), primarily from the Evangelical Free Church of America, the Baptist General Conference, the Assemblies of God, and the Christian Reformed Church. This purpose was achieved by developing three key phases of: preparation, connecting and equipping. It was discovered that most of the participants were unaware of their spiritual gift(s) prior to the spiritual gift knowledge assessment; that people will serve if asked and if they believe that they are making a unique contribution to a well-organized effort based on their giftedness and passion; that church ministry functions at its optimal level when people work in teams; and that rediscovering the Biblical basis for gift-based ministry can bring about a renewal and reformation in the church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721882343178240,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:28:55.865Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:59:19Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:09:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b74fcedc-d122-4118-8859-3f9d15335785","accessControl_ssim":["3a130b39-e644-45b4-9c54-80ade1436386"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The hermeneutics of Acts: a foundation for the development of a college-level exposition course on the book of Acts"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:59:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:25:12Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["90c05a01-1acb-4cc2-9ebb-23ae03d3f113"],"hasLease_ssim":["7afaea19-5982-4065-8356-ec3910e561d6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Grant R Osborne"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jeffrey C Billingsley"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School of Trinity International University"],"subject_tesim":["Bible. To accurately draw out an author's intended meaning in scripture, one must apply a responsible interpretive process to its language and literary forms. The author sets forth a responsible five-step interpretive process to convert a time-bound precept to a contextualized timeless principle.
