As a result the congregation's ministries have not been aligned with any explicit overarching vision. Ministries were sometimes not sure how their particular activities aligned with the larger purposes of the church. A process was needed to bring the congregation's leadership together to start thinking strategically and plan the future ministries of the church around a shared vision. A strategic planning team led the process by conducting congregational surveys, meeting regularly to pray, studying survey results and writing new mission and vision statements. The outcomes of this project include new mission and vision statements, a willingness to align the ministries accordingly, and a more forward looking, visionary leadership. The author facilitated a series of seminar-workshops that were guided by two action research cycles and appreciative inquiry. Participant interaction during the workshops provided data which was supplemented by focus groups, natural observation and interviews. Positive mentoring relationships have been initiated that promise to lead to a mentoring culture in the context. From Romans 12:2 the thesis looks at how the church has embraced the patterns of the world and how the process moves them from those patterns towards Christ and his Kingdom values. Two (Action Research) churches went through the Looking process and developed next steps to begin participating with God in mission. The leaders developed three areas listed in Natural Church Development as being critical to a healthy growing church. A survey was conducted and then the leaders made changes to their model of leadership shifting from a 'top-down model' to a model that empowered others and shared authority. A second survey measured congregational responses to the changes. This research project addresses the training needs of care group leaders by developing a training program that attends to the main functions of a care group leader. The threefold office of Christ as prophet, priest, and king is used as a model to guide the development of the training program. This research project facilitates the engagement of inner work on the part of the Christian leader using a formational process that includes spiritual direction meetings, group meetings, and classroom lectures. The process is guided by a theologically grounded model that consists of four domains: attention to God image, self-identity, spiritual practices, and ministry development. Through action research and narrative inquiry, critical events in the workplace journeys of individuals are heard, recorded, and evaluated in test groups. Results show that as the storytellers gained new insight through recalling and reflecting on workplace episodes, test groups found their stories effective in stimulating meaningful dialog on work. From this project, a narrative pathway paradigm has emerged to identify, record and disseminate workplace testimonies as a small group curriculum. The theological rationale focuses on the nature of the church as old and new and the congregation as a complex family system. The literature review focuses on congregational culture, a survey of the transitional leaders' attributes and actions, and an understanding of the learning organization.  A comparison of one congregation's historic vs. current leadership culture, by means of group interviews and surveys, was conducted so as to understand the trajectory of its leadership culture.
