A lay and clergy pilot group of some fifteen persons (Methodists and others) prepared themselves for such union by concentrating on five areas of study: the nature of the church, evangelism, the place of women in the church, music, and the origins of the three black Methodist denominations. Couple ministry in historical and contemporary settings were researched.  Questionnaires were employed.  Parish laity assisted in producing a pamphlet describing clergy couples and their innovative ministries. This program was implemented by developing an 'Adult Discipleship Plan' for the church; offering small discipleship bi-weekly groups for nine months, one overnight retreat, and a training event for church decision-makers; and relating worship themes. All three goals of the project were realized and, with modification, could be used in other
