Lay evangelists were trained to be, do, and tell the gospel of Jesus. They served as the nucleus in the process of transforming the congregation and the broader community to become witnesses. Twenty-four men and women in the department of evangelism at Macedonia United Church of Christ in Raleigh, North Carolina, were trained through workshops, retreats, and a service of one on one witnessing. One of these ministries that the church is called to do is prison ministry. It is my wish to see the ministry of taking the Word of God to the prison system as a mandatory ministry of the church especially in the African American church. This ministry of the Word of God in the prisons must be in a pre- and post-ministry. The purpose was to find a culturally sensitive methodology which could be relevant to different cultural contexts. The model was implemented in two countries, Italy and the United States of America. In both cases, the methodology focused on the application of a narrative approach to the task of care. The first part of the project involved establishing a computer center at the Mount Zion Baptist Church of Germantown in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The second part involved developing a course of instruction and putting together a workbook on computer basics. The design, implementation, and evaluation of the model were based on participatory action research methodology. The uniqueness of this project is that it offers parishioners an opportunity to use story sharing and the grieving process to deal with the change and transition associated with this move. Focus group sessions and 'town-hall' meetings provide opportunities for sharing and growth. This process resulted in an effective partnership producing a curriculum which was culturally sensitive and committed to excellence. A model for a new ministry role, the Sunday School Shepherd, was developed and implemented at First United Methodist Church of Silsbee, Texas. Appropriate training and encouragement were given. Participants in the Shepherd ministry found the training useful and were able to function in valuable ways within their class structures. A short video introduced each weekly theme in the small groups and participants were given a workbook to personalize and record their questions, prayers and growth.
