Is there an effective method of intervention that can change the direction of struggling churches? This project designed an intervention utilizing the adaptive challenge approach to help churches discern the next step. After a six- week Bible Study followed by a workshop, their values and beliefs were challenged. Personal testimonies realistically depict our everyday life and are at the core of who we are as Christians. In sharing our testimony of what God has done for us in a corporate worship service, we create the space for authentic God-talk to take place among Christians. The basic hypothesis is that since the advent of the megachurch, the small Black churches have followed the trend and exchanged the mid-week testimony and Bible study service for the 'pastor's Bible study.' In losing the testimony service, members lost the vehicle to share their stories and experiences of the Holy Spirit and how they have overcome in difficult situations. This thesis was tested by conducting a six-week Bible study on selected passages from Matthew for the Administrative Board and Council of Ministries of Clonmell United Methodist Church.  As a followup to this study, the annual planning session for the church was conducted and a new mission statement was developed with visioning and goal-setting. This process allows for the emergence of greater congruence between an inherited view of the Bible and a view which functions in accord with experience. In this project, four passages with textual variants were considered.  A complete textual discussion is followed by an exegesis.  A sermon was then developed which incorporated the textual material. The paper notes how the issues of interpretation often recur, although the cultural context, and even the conception of the authority and inspiration of scripture may change.  One such issue is the value given to the historical context of the original writing or speaking of a given text.  The paper provides an overview of recurring issues in the history of interpretation and methods that various techniques of interpretation answer them.
