This project questioned whether the Beulah Land Community Church could intervene and interrupt the cycles of destruction of a four-generation family. I propose that the theology of Black liberation is a good theoretical place to begin to think about how to achieve such a goal. It seeks to provide formation, freedom, identity, justice, and hope for African American youth. In American cities, including Washington DC, these young people are caught up in an epidemic of killings, gangs, and crimes and tragedies related to drugs and alcohol.  This project contends that these problems are spiritual as well as societal, making for a crisis of black faith as well as identity.  For many African Americans, hopelessness and despair have replaced faith. The analysis of the current situation (questionnaire) finds a lack of meaningful involvement which the author traces back to the predominant middle-class orientation of the membership.  He confronts these findings with an 'ecclesiology of renewal' based on Bonhoeffer's concept of the church as 'being for others' and the ecclesiological implications of black theology as proposed by James C Cone. 'Tools' for evaluating that premise included: critical reviews by participants and observers, certain elements of black theology, and a Christian transformist's view of culture.
