Individuals were invited to participate in a study that dispelled strongly held feelings of distrust. Process for planned change was used to foster inclusion. Bible study sessions encouraged a reflection on God, a joint worship service was culturally inclusive, and an economic forum increased knowledge of financial empowerment. An interview and questionnaire measured satisfaction and suggested that two diverse congregations can work together to create change in the urban context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126422660579328,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:27:46.728Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:39:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:14:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"15ea9ffd-117f-40ec-9899-61ff5f8c4bed","accessControl_ssim":["c387b41b-6cc6-4fcf-afba-0efb1d1dd24f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Creating community through multicultural ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:39:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:46:04Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["103350a1-982f-4d61-94dc-4978bcb1e9ec"],"hasLease_ssim":["71add205-3f89-41cf-8310-e618a1746da8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["C Anthony Hunt"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. African American 'first churches' grew and blossomed, reflecting the diverse population, interests, and concerns of the African American community and practicing ministry from 'down-under' as Jesus did. Taking Asbury United Methodist Church as an example of an African American first church in Washington DC, this project studies how such churches began and developed while explaining why many of them have become middle class enclaves with a privatized religious expression. Their corporate ministry is private and detached, concerned with the institution's internal environment. Past glories of antebellum African American first churches--commitment to liberation and a ministry from down-under, challenging the status quo and preferring the least--are their future hopes."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718942089936896,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:42:11.821Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
