In a two-part study, an assimilation model for new member education was developed and the model was field tested in three ninety minute focus group sessions.  Although the participating churches focused primarily on administrative efficiency, there is interest and need for a new model. Grounding contemplation/action in a process that is dynamically and fundamentally part of the human condition, the author offers insights into activist, Dorothy Day, and monastic, Thomas Merton. The author developed two additional tools--a Rule of Life spiritual guide and a year-round stewardship program. The researcher designed a spiritual gift workshop that included an evaluation process to test his thesis.  The evaluation process included results of two surveys and several measurement tools. The reader is led through a discussion of the communication eras ultimately to understand the secondarily oral society thriving in Appalachia today.  oral stories are recorded, transcribed, and edited for sermonic use in story sermons.  The results revealed the significant benefit to be gained through the use of story sermons within congregational settings.
