It seeks to provide formation, freedom, identity, justice, and hope for African American youth. In American cities, including Washington DC, these young people are caught up in an epidemic of killings, gangs, and crimes and tragedies related to drugs and alcohol.  This project contends that these problems are spiritual as well as societal, making for a crisis of black faith as well as identity.  For many African Americans, hopelessness and despair have replaced faith. The project employed four key groups including a Rediscovering Your Spiritual Gifts class, Search Groups in preparation for a 'Weekend of Discovery,' a 'Weekend of Discovery' renewal program, and a Disciple Bible Study.  The project conducted interviews with 34 church members using 21 questions. The project found that the root cause of problems involving 'crack' cocaine probably stems from economic inequality and the USA's unwillingness to promote fair employment treatment for all citizens. Interdiction by law enforcement agencies and community-based street patrols are among the failed efforts to eradicate the problem.  Successful resolutions can occur by using biblical teachings, and through supporting and encouraging courageous mothers and parents who rear their children to understand the importance of respect for authority and love for God, for self, and for others. They learned tools necessary to develop creative liturgies, and used these tools to participate with clergy and staff in planning and carrying out liturgy for corporate worship. A change in understanding of lay ministry is necessary to overcome the inactivity or passivity of the laypersons.  This requires a change from a consciousness based on the Confucian tradition to the Christian idea based on the Bible and Christian tradition. This project suggests a better understanding of ministry and church office, educational programs, and important implications that are necessary for the Korean Church to activate lay ministry. The practice of confirmation in a local church provided the setting for the project, conducted over a 13-week period with persons between adolescence and adulthood. Investors owning and buying properties for speculation place the church in a lopsided competition for property ownership.  Assumptions of some churchgoers who understand the steepled church building as an authenticating symbol require a pastor to address perceptions hindering church growth.  This project offers findings that suggest that people are tied to a steepled-church concept.
