The leader used the socratic (open-ended questioning) method to enable participants to expand their awareness of the power of Scripture in their personal lives. A process was provided for daily prayer and meditation between sessions. Sessions included meditation, writing in a journal, responding to questions, dialogue in small groups and becoming biblical characters. Most participants found the model helpful in deepening their awareness of and relationship with others, including God. This project/thesis tested the hypothesis that ministering in an environment of religious pluralism causes the minister's theology to become more inclusive. Four theological models for understanding religious pluralism were developed. The models were then used with both a reflection group and a survey to test the hypothesis in the context of the Navy Chaplain Corps. The data suggests that the hypothesis is often true. The method of study included research, a five-week study curriculum and three questionnaires. The goals of the curriculum led to the consideration of a Unitarian Universalist theology of liberation (and other meaningful insights), but not enough time was allotted to measure motivation for church outreach. The challenge facing liberal religion in an age of 'theology from below' is addressed by this study.
