This is accomplished by examining Roman Catholic and Protestant attempts at Hispanic ministry in the U.S.A. in the past; by looking at the Biblical vision for a multiethnic church; and, finally, by showing what approach(es) would be necessary for an effective bicultural and bilingual ministry between Fourteenth street and Iglesia Hispana Christian Reformed Churches in Holland, Michigan.Chapter one shows the changes taking place in our society and describes the characteristics of the Hispanics who are changing the fabric of our society by presenting the demographics of the Hispanics in the U.S.A in general, and, more specifically, in Holland, Michigan.Chapter Two discusses an historical overview of the attempts by the Roman catholic and the Protestant Churches to minister to the Hispanics in the U.S.A. It is an encouragement to pastors to include geographical, historical, and archaeological material, theological themes, and contemporary issues, in the planning for their adult teaching to enhance their preaching.The first part of the project is the creation of a student workbook as an illustration of an adult teaching curriculum. Genesis 11:30-25:10 serves as the model for the workbook entitled 'Rejoicing In New Beginnings.' Chapter one 'Traveling with God' is a review of appropriate geographical conditions, the historical background, and life settings of Abraham and Sarah. Chapter two, 'Friends with God, 'is a study of the theological themes from the passages. Chapter three, 'Living Everyday with God, 'is an examination of the contemporary faith and life issues which can be identified from the Abraham and Sarah narrative. Each chapter is designed to be one twelve week quarter of Sunday School lessons. The workbook serves as resource material of the class, but it also is designed to prompt the students to reflect on the data which has been presented.The second part of the project is a methodology explaining how a series of sermons can be produced using the classroom experience and material. The section, 'In the Study,' is a description of the process of selecting passages, planning the curriculum, and preparing the workbook. The unit, 'In the Classroom,' offers some thoughts about the presentation of the workbook, but primarily emphasizes the need for the pastor to dialogue with the class and then retrieve the essence of those issues for direction in sermon preparation. Chapter Two presents a description of the physiological and psychological effects of stress. Effective coping mechanisms and stress management techniques are evaluated. Chapter Three reviews the biblical concept of prayer and the implications of spiritual development for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder victims. Attention is drawn to the response of God to prayers of petition.Chapter Four reviews theological perspectives which pertain to Intensive Journal Writing as a psychological and spiritual development resource. As the revealed activity of God becomes the work of redemption, healing activity is defined.Chapter Five presents the Intensive Journal Writing technique of Ira Progoff. The use of this Journal Writing system as a part of a Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Rehabilitation Program is described. Special consideration is given to the spiritual dimension of journal development.Chapter Six demonstrates that Intensive Journal Writing is a productive means of spiritual development. An interest in this subject emerged as a result of the author's professional development in industrial, educational, and ministerial settings.Chapter 1 explores selected biblical passages from both the Old and New Testament and selected theological themes which relate to the subject of transformational leadership in the church. Saint Paul's writings are the primary material used for the motivation and purpose of leadership. Chapter 2 is a report on selected literature dealing with transformational leadership. The scholarly contributions of James MacGregor Burns and Bernard M. Bass are given primary consideration.Chapter 3 describes the procedures used in the research part of this paper. The thesis tested in the research is that the core values of a transformational leader are different from the core values of other types of leaders and that in both cases those core values influence the style of leadership chosen.Chapter 4 summarizes the results of the research and provides interpretation of the data collected. Chapter One presents perceptions of power from a purely social science perspective and from a theological perspective.Chapter Two investigates some sections of the Old and New Testaments, and some formative theologians who have had great influence on various Christian belief systems, to determine if these sources favor the dominance of men over women. Chapter Three is devoted to how women see themselves in the current situation in society, in the church, and in marriage. Some feminist authors and social scientists who discuss equality of the sexes or the lack of it are given the opportunity to state their cases.Chapter Four is a presentation of three case studies in which various psychotherapeutic models were used in thecounseling sessions. This chapter demonstrates the impact of the abuse of power, and suggests that correcting this misuse of power gives hope of establishing the solidity such unions should have.Chapter Five is a series of summary reflections based on the project as a whole, with particular attention to the three case studies. The vulnerable sharing of power in a loving way does not diminish the bonds of marriage. The era of change in which we live demands a ministry based upon these essential qualities. These elements may well be nurtured by the ministry of a spiritual director. In fact, the responsibility of finding words to express the compassion of God is seen as an essential service to be rendered to priests by spiritual directors. Such service can be provided by the director and received by the directee only in the context of the process of contemplation. Part of the process of this project was the search for an effective method of thoughtfulness and careful, interested dialogue, that is, contemplation.  Such in roads into the natures of God and humankind help find words for the right questions and find expression in the compassion modeled by Jesus.  Taking the lead of St. Paul, the format of the epistle was chosen. The practice of catechetical preaching is now in decline, both in quality and quantity.Chapter Two deals with the problems of catechetical preaching. It is often repetitious from year to year and therefore boring. Preachers sometimes brings theological presuppositions to their preaching that are different from the views expressed by the Heidelberg Catechism. Chapter Three gives us reasons why catechetical preaching can still be useful and relevant. The Heidelberg Catechism provides us with a useful framework of thought and confession. Its emphasis on the promises of God can be a very effective antidote to legalism and cold orthodoxy. Chapter Four studies and critiques the approaches to catechetical preaching of Peter Y. Three eras of conference history are described: 1906-1930, 1930-1962, 1962-present.Chapter II is a biblical study of service including an examination of Isaiah's suffering servant texts, Mark 10:45 and its Christological basis for service by each Christian, and a study of four New Testament texts frequently noted as influencing our understanding of service and deacons: Acts 6:1-6, Philippians 1:1, 1 Timothy 3:8-13, and Romans 16:1-2.Chapter III examines the theology of service in the Reformed tradition by considering statements in John Calvin; 16th and 17th century Dutch Reformed Church Orders; the 1978-1979 CRC synodical position on worldhunger, 'And He Had Compassion on Them'; Karl Barth; and The Deacons Handbook.Chapter IV considers similarities and differences in the structures of deacons' conferences by comparing past and present conference constitutions. About  the  same  time  as  the article ,  'Deliver  Us  From  This  Domine :  The  Problem  of  Clergy Immobility'  by  Alvin  J.  Poppen  was  printed,  I  was  searching for  a  topic  for  my  project.  The  project  evolved  out  of  a wedding  of  Poppen's   concern  for  clergy  immobility  and  longer pastorates  and  my  concern  for  good  preaching. A  search  for  information  turned  up  few  resources.  I could  only  find  two  books  and  a  few  articles  on long pastorates. No  one had  written  extensively  on the combination of long pastorates  and  preaching.  The combination  seemed  to  be  a  current  and  fascinating  topic  for further  investigation.  The  project  evolved  to  the  point where  I  sought  to  understand  the  relationship  of  good preaching  to  the  healthy,  long  pastorate. The  project  looked  to  the Reformed  Church  in  America  as  the  larger  arena.  It  is  my denominational  affiliation.  The  project  narrowed  the  arena to  those  churches  having  long  pastorates  concurrent  with  the beginning  of  the  investigation.
