The decline has affected all church affiliations, including Catholic, Protestant mainline, evangelical, Pentecostal, Anabaptist and independent churches of all sizes and ethnicities. In particular, Millennials, those in the age range of eighteen to twenty-nine years, have left the church in significant numbers or have never affiliated at all. The fastest growing segments of the American population are agnostics and atheists. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, with nearly eight hundred churches is considered a Bible belt with a long history of consistent attendance. This project will explore whether there is attendance decline in Lancaster County and, if so, what can be developed to reverse the trend. Reader responses to a series on the subject in the Lancaster Sunday News will be used to help determine the extent, if any. At the same time, pastors of fifty churches of varying sizes, ethnicities and doctrine will be interviewed to examine local patterns. Using research data on church growth and revitalization from around the country, suggestions and recommendations will be made to help reverse the trend in Lancaster County if decline is evident."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860305164894208,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:50.608Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0e44e024-cdb0-4b93-b89a-dcb32297df62","accessControl_ssim":["cb890245-e0e4-423d-9325-0af2e14f2f4c"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Revitalizing the church for a new day: identity, purpose, and theology"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6eeb0b07-80b5-4ec3-bf9c-d95248ee3882"],"hasLease_ssim":["47a211f6-6564-47dc-8c7a-03cf10d953f5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Some congregations want to maintain the status quo and dwell in survival mode, while other churches are imagining new possibilities for their ministry. Denominations are faced with these same issues and now must make some decisions regarding their future. Revitalizing the Church for a New Day: Identity, Purpose, and Theology provides hope for the local church and denominations as we discern the new thing that God is doing in our midst. After reading books and visiting churches during a three-month sabbatical, a survey was designed for churches to use as they wrestle with these issues. I administered this survey with about a dozen congregations and then met with them in a follow-up discussion. Following my interviews with these congregations and going through my own transition in ministry, I discovered that denominations and local churches must focus on three aspects of vitality. Mainline denominations do not have a clear identity, which has trickled down to the local church. Furthermore, we have traded theology for marketing and advertising. The research revealed that our denominations are in decline because congregational leaders are not equipped to discern their identity, purpose, and theology of ministry. The survey used in this research will help the basic unit of witness, the local church, revitalize and prepare for the congregation’s bright and hopeful future."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860297365585920,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:43.170Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:08Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:11Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"69ad4c5e-69fe-4145-b2f4-39119503b83c","accessControl_ssim":["f4b3c2ac-01db-4076-8952-737c3740abf1"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["An ecclesiological rationale of a congregational planning process"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:07Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5bf40bb1-79f4-4818-8515-21ac6ef4df3f"],"hasLease_ssim":["0ec23b54-2ef9-4ff6-9a3e-feaf1efda361"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1980"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. While some degree of effectiveness has flowed from this process, I have felt an increasing desire to have a more complete understanding of the theological position reflected in the planning approach I have followed. Thus, I have chosen in this Project Report to fulfill this desire by making an ecclesiological study that expresses my theological view of the Church and the relationship of that view to the program planning procedures I have utilized within my tradition of congregational church polity. Therefore, in what I am titling, “An Ecclesiological Rationale of a Congregational Planning Process,” I have sought to pursue my search in the following way. In the first major division of this dissertation, I am presenting the Project Report itself. In it I have made two divisions. In Part A, I deal with the concerns related to making the ecclesiological study I referred to above. Part B is devoted to evaluating the process presented in The Manual…My two-fold purpose for presenting The Manual is: 1, to provide necessary information about the process for conducting my ecclesiological rationale; and 2, so to describe the procedures that some other congregation may use them if it wishes."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860265933471744,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:13.194Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dc38a6b2-098c-4419-b38f-b7770152a900","accessControl_ssim":["ac102d82-28ee-4919-821c-3ab966c78f2b"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Developing a local church operations manual: a model process"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["380f412d-9da8-4b91-b9e3-ea7211125ae0"],"hasLease_ssim":["536102ef-c27b-437b-8d22-583fecc7a4f6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1980"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The basic need addressed herein is discontinuity in church operations which results from frequent personnel changes. Especially, churches which exist in a highly mobile and changing society are affected by a high rate of leadership turnover; and, therefore, require some method which facilitates easy transmission of essential information and speedy adjustment of leaders to their tasks. Otherwise, the frequent turnover of leadership may result in loss of essential information, waste of valuable time and energy, and misappropriation of resources…Described herein is a process by which a local church may develop an up-to-date operations manual. The document, produced through collaboration with local church leaders, provides a systemic method to transmit information and to acclimate leaders to responsibilities and tasks necessary for continuity in church operations. Group methods, research of existing policies and information, individual interviews of persons possessing special knowledge, and other such data-gathering methods as necessary to develop an up-to-date manual are described. Additionally, this project enlarges ownership of information concerning church operations by gathering such information into one document, which is presented for official adoption by the church. Upon hiring the current senior pastor in 2009, the church began a substantial revitalization journey that continues to this day. One of the early steps was revising the church's bylaws, which nullified all previous policies and left the process for future policy development unclear. As a church grows numerically, developing the systems that support its growth becomes paramount. This project addressed one of those systems by proposing the establishment of a policy development strategy. The first part of this project explored the field of church policies to determine the best process for policy development. The second part examined the current policies at Stetson Baptist Church to determine policy development needs. The third and final part established a policy development strategy for church council consideration. The desired outcome was for the church council to implement the policy development strategy, but those actions fall outside of the scope of the project."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"_version_":1818806083291971584,"timestamp":"2024-12-18T19:04:08.158Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:06:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:52:54Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2a81f771-d504-4a32-aaf5-8151d6eeb6b8","accessControl_ssim":["d19c81e6-0b72-497e-a332-61d9769f9cab"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Privacy and the prayers of the people"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:06:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:47:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["954b646f-5c5f-4039-ad14-2af398516868"],"hasLease_ssim":["7ad821ef-e2fb-4389-9974-37e3e2402aae"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. By writing in the form of a pastoral essay, I examine the privacy issues that exist in common church practices. I then look specifically at the Prayers of the People as they have been developing in the Evangelical and Reformed tradition of the United Church of Christ to highlight the growing need to have worship leaders and planners examine their Prayers of the People to see if there are privacy issues present in their worship. I seek to highlight the very real possible damages that can be caused through the unauthorized giving out of personal information in many of these prayers, while also pointing out the possible qualities of that prayer time that can be lost in an attempt to completely safeguard the privacy rights of all who are involved. I then suggest steps that can be taken to preserve public sharing during the Prayers of the People while simultaneously attempting to respect people's right to privacy. Finally, I suggest an etiquette for the Prayers of the People for churches to use for their practice of the Prayers of the People when it includes the opportunity for public sharing of specific joys and concerns."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"identifier_tesim":["https://www.proquest.com/dissertations-theses/privacy-prayers-people/docview/305365037/se-2"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873270428598272,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:52:55.247Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:01:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:52:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0df3cd8d-addd-4069-84b1-883eb1fed295","accessControl_ssim":["013f4d99-cea3-459d-a555-f59248be2f2e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Good news for living churches: organizational dynamics and creativity in mainline congregations"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:01:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:46:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5d8bf67d-19b0-42f7-b0a9-7664f09fddfe"],"hasLease_ssim":["3ee2aba0-d3a9-4a86-a54b-b0c42eabf76e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"additional_rights_info_tesim":["David M Mellott"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2011"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The author intervened with Transactional Analysis to identify factors that inhibited or facilitated the flow of energy. Five hypotheses dealt with: 1) energizing ego states, 2) redirecting energy, 3) script decisions, 4) contracts, and 5) stroking. In simulated situation and regular council meetings, data were gathered and redirecting energy considered. Support was found that appropriately energized ego states facilitated decision-making, whereas inappropriately energized ego states inhibited decision-making.
