The instrument was developed in consultation with a committee of recently admitted members, and pilot tested with a group of prospective members and with a group of recently admitted members. The envisioned instrument and its administration is not, of course, an end in itself but part of a large process of education which it is intended to serve. It is not, however, the purpose of the project to specify or delineate such an educational process: the forms and contents of such a process may be many and the possible uses of the instrument manifold. Nonetheless, certain suggestions as to both the use and the limitations of the instrument have been included in this study. This study was done within the content of the United Church of Christ. By staying within the context of the denomination, the number of variables was reduced. However, the contribution of this study is not limited to the United Church of Christ, and the instrument which it produced is adaptable. The originality of this study lies in the methodology for achieving the instrumental objective; in utilizing the resources of a steering committee of recently admitted members to identify the content and language of the instrument; and in the validation of the content and language by pilot testing with a group of prospective members and with a group of persons admitted to a United Church of Christ congregation within the last two years."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860265393455104,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:12.678Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4cb35c29-b8ef-44d5-b9e2-b63dfa7054b5","accessControl_ssim":["da2bb732-a1d0-4067-be7b-28b008b604fc"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Church growth and decline: a case study of the variable factors effecting membership ingression and egression of four churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4b28e756-c6f9-4248-b891-d46271817d22"],"hasLease_ssim":["4968f9a3-9537-4a03-b620-17755775a593"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1979"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. A committee of four or five people who are concerned about the mission of the church and who have a deep commitment and an enthusiastic spirit would make the survey, evaluate and act upon the results, and monitor future membership dynamics. In acting upon the results, the committee would evaluate the existing programs in light of their effectiveness and meaning for the membership. If the leadership of a local church follows the suggestions in this report, several important changes may be expected to be the result. First, the research (the actual inquiry, data collection, and analysis) will help a church to discover the reasons why people are joining and/or leaving the church; to identify attracting and repelling factors and activities of the church, areas of specific needs of the people the church is trying to reach and strategies of the church in responding to those needs, the population objective of the church’s outreach, and factors influential in attracting and retaining future members; and to provide some candid data for making policy decisions. Second, policy decisions informed by the research will help to change congregational activities, emphasis, programs, pastoral priorities and activities, the direction and objective of the church’s outreach, and will help to promote attitudinal changes. And, finally, the problem is that some churches will continue to decline no matter what is done. In those cases, almost all that can be promised is that leadership will understand the root causes of the decline."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860257300545536,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:04.961Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:52Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"93ca7636-bbbc-44a1-aeee-4f5d625121bd","accessControl_ssim":["b68e82ba-1405-4f5c-8fb5-08418f787698"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["A ministry to inactive members at the point of conflict or resistance: A dissertation submitted to the faculty in candidacy for the degree of Doctor of ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:51Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d26a128e-1ac1-4fa7-b9fd-8fa2d7184621"],"hasLease_ssim":["8d246c71-11f3-488d-b5e4-4c4e512608ce"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1979"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Beginning in January of 1976 and continuing through December of 1978, this experimental ministry took place with the inactive members of the congregation of Christ Church, United Church of Christ, Annville, Pennsylvania. During this three-year period the pastoral ministry in the parish was carried out in the normal manner. This project became an integral part of the parish work and was seldom mentioned, in order to avoid affecting the results. The members of the parish were aware that I was involved in a doctoral project, but very few had any knowledge of the area being studied. Further, the project did not alter the remainder of the parish program in any significant manner, with the exception of the fact that a number of the inactive members responded in some measurable way. The project is, therefore, a plan which can be readily adapted and utilized by any parish in which inactive members are a concern. My intention in this project was to explore the problem of that conflict in the parish which is related to inactive members by demonstrating that a ministry at the point of conflict or resistance would be helpful to the inactive persons involved and the parish itself, with the result that the learnings from this ministry would provide practical guidelines for pastors and churches to minister with inactive members."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860248248188928,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:56.328Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-10-30T17:35:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-10-30T20:21:40Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f46ab181-b099-4ba0-b4d1-0a56312c3ea3","accessControl_ssim":["6ba195ad-03ad-4bae-af2c-019b4cbe9798"],"depositor_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"title_tesim":["Building cultural intelligence in an age of incivility : growing in CQ through holistic discipleship"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-10-30T17:35:51Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-10-30T20:21:40Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["583d5a25-b40f-4a9c-9674-84e64fc247c1"],"hasLease_ssim":["b93ca740-b123-4d2e-9171-f0ea20d63154"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry","DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2022"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. A series of polarizing events including racial violence, police brutality, protests, riots, and a presidential election created a divided broader culture that was also experienced in the church. Pastors struggled to unite their congregations in the face of divisive rhetoric in the media and heated responses to issues dividing the culture down racial, socio-economic, and political lines. The goal of this case study was to help church members grow in their ability to communicate respectfully across cultural difference through intentional holistic discipleship\r\n\r\nThis study utilized a mixed methods approach (both qualitative and quantitative designs) using semi-structured interviews with sixteen members of one church who each experienced significant intercultural competence changes as measured by Intercultural Development Inventory®. The interviews focused on gaining data with four research questions: 1. How did participants grow in CQ® during the year? 2. How did power dynamics affect participants’ growth in CQ® during the year? 3. What discipleship practices affected participants’ growth in CQ® during the year? and 4. What barriers hindered participants’ ability to grow in CQ® during the year?\r\n\r\nThe literature review focused on four key areas to understand how to grow in intercultural competence through holistic discipleship: the Acts church as an apologetic for cultural intelligence; cultural intelligence, power dynamics and discipleship and spiritual formation.\r\n\r\nThis study concluded that growing in cultural intelligence, particularly in polarizing conditions in churches requires: 1) having leadership buy-in; 2) understanding the intercultural dynamics which include CQ® growth factors, an objective assessment of intercultural competence and power dynamics; and 3) maintaining a focus on the solution – gospel transformation through holistic discipleship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2022/Hawkins_Vanessa_DMin_2022.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1814371711347326976,"timestamp":"2024-10-30T20:21:41.526Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:27:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:50:48Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8d948868-ca60-44e8-8399-476d34d0226b","accessControl_ssim":["928c6609-e324-407f-9341-ba206540121d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Per capita apportionments: their effect on church active member rolls in the synod of the northeast, Presbyterian Church (USA)"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:27:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:45:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["38416884-079d-4c31-9479-9cfc23f6b771"],"hasLease_ssim":["cb31656d-746c-4d61-a157-5eb6893a880a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"additional_rights_info_tesim":["Loyde H Hartley"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. It asks whether marginal members are removed from the active member roll because of per capita apportionment expense and, if so, what impact this has on the total number of persons on active member rolls of Presbyterian Churches. Research methods include 1) an investigation of General Assembly minutes to highlight historical sections; 2) interviews with executive presbyters to compare the funding philosophies and approaches of twenty-one presbyteries; 3) a survey of elders. Main findings are that 1) per capita apportionments most influence the rate of removal of marginal members in churches with less than 150 members; 2) financial stress increases the likelihood that marginal members will be removed from the active roll; 3) once a person is placed on the inactive roll that person seldom becomes an active member again.
