I sought to fulfill three goals in this project: first, to research the field of palliative care, with a focus upon the incarcerated; second, to develop a curriculum to equip students in palliative care skills among the incarcerated; and third, to equip upperclassmen Leavell college students with palliative care skills among the incarcerated through teaching sessions.\r\n\r\nThe methodology for implementing the project included lectures, PowerPoint \r\npresentations, group discussions of skills, role-plays, and field practicum work. \r\nDiscussion scenarios stemmed from the Louisiana State Penitentiary’s hospice program, the Mississippi State Penitentiary’s palliative care unit, and Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. I presented the material in six, sixty-minute sessions. The sessions aimed to instruct in three domains of learning: cognitive, affective, and psychomotor. I administered pretests and posttests to evaluate student learning. Students also evaluated the instructor’s skills through post-session and post-practicum surveys."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"_version_":1855592722865324032,"timestamp":"2026-01-28T20:12:01.507Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"19468d40-8706-4ec5-8ce9-788cc30fddb7","accessControl_ssim":["e454dd2b-2d43-4874-aa69-156869494cb9"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["The use of touch and patients’ perceptions of its effects: in the practice of ministry in a general hospital setting"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5a4b70e5-8273-4cbd-af9c-06146cba62b8"],"hasLease_ssim":["8f68a2f7-804b-42c0-bcdf-507ff2d5b77a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1980"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The study explored patients’ positive and negative feelings and thoughts about being touched and the places on their bodies where they were touched. The goal of the study was to determine whether physical touch was or was not important to the patients. If it was affirmed that being physically touched by pastors, physicians, and nurses was important to patients, such information could be helpful to those professional people in ministering to patients. The methodology consisted of taking a taped interview from thirty randomly selected, adult patients from the hospital census who had been visited by their pastors. A pre-designed, structured, interview questionnaire was used by the investigator in the interviews. Where appropriate, the chi-square goodness of fit test was used to determine the extent to which observed frequencies deviated from frequencies to be expected under the null hypothesis."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860257515503616,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:05.165Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:48Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b05efc2a-1e54-4f18-a90d-710645d5e577","accessControl_ssim":["147ac4a6-81ed-4257-a76a-810de9096432"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Pastoral care of the adult cardiac pre-operative patient: a case study"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:45Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6555b6e1-35e1-450b-bf4a-9f1a85001769"],"hasLease_ssim":["3b33579a-c4f7-46ff-b308-1ba55a643779"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1979"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. A case study covering a period of eight months provides the data for the exploration. The time span was January through August 1978. Within that time the patient, who is also a parishioner of mine, refused to undergo cardiac catheterization on one occasion and three times refused to undergo open-heart surgery which involved a mitral valve implant and three bypass grafts. As we shall see, the patient exhibited a high degree of anxiety and employed various tactics in his efforts to cope with his anxiety. We shall also be privy to the pressures to which he was subjected and the pressures which he exerted upon his family, the medical staff, and his friends, including me. A somewhat unique dimension of the project is based in part on the fact that, at the patient’s request and with the permission of the chief surgeon, I was present during the surgical procedure. If pastoral care is to have any significance for the parishioner, then surely the pastor must use every authentic means available to support and sustain the parishioner."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860240995188736,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:49.411Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:10:53Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:53:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"43b51d33-6466-49eb-b20a-367d503862a5","accessControl_ssim":["e81e4f5e-083a-4755-9c35-444923f9d6f8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The construction and validation of a simulation experience dealing with attitudes toward death and dying"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:10:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:47:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["95600db5-6afb-484a-966e-156074a79a2f"],"hasLease_ssim":["9ea8fe53-aa1f-4912-b712-b9bc91d2fb75"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1975"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Persons--as they relate to themselves, to one another, and to God. Persons--as they express their needs and try to meet one another's needs. Persons--as they seek to discover the meaning behind tragedy and joy, and the significance of life and death. The parish ministry has the unique opportunity and responsibility to express the love of God and the salvation of our Lord Jesus Christ to persons as they encounter the great moments of their lives--birth, baptism, confirmation, marriage, and death. The entire milieu of life is encompassed within the parish ministry and the lives of people are seen in their entirety, completeness, and wholeness. One does not specialize as one relates to people in the parish. Of necessity, the parish minister must relate to the whole person--body, mind, and spirit. Even more important, it is necessary for the minister to see himself as loved of God and as a whole person. Only then is he able to relate his and God's love to those lives which are entrusted to his care. It is an awesome responsibility, but inherent to the task is the conviction that he is doing the will of God and is seeking to show God's love to persons. This conviction enables ministry. It provides the incentive and the impetus to minister in a world that continually denies personhood and the worth of individual and collective man."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873287426015232,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:53:11.457Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:09:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:51:28Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"aab6f18f-d0ea-4af4-990c-9750bc659808","accessControl_ssim":["ab52105e-15ac-4d85-a625-d25fa9d50437"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A study of the missional, theological, financial, and legal factors involved in developing a Christian whole person health center"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:09:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:45:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["793dcca3-5781-4b08-a82a-2d63a132da38"],"hasLease_ssim":["e0031bba-02b2-4413-95db-ce9addea1cfb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"additional_rights_info_tesim":["Robert D Webber"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. This data, along with their personal, recorded testimonies, suggests that this process had a salutary effect on the ten patients, as their affective responses measured higher than those in the two control groups."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873155060072448,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:51:05.223Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:22:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:50:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b01ec1fb-5b06-4072-a2d8-758a219b9617","accessControl_ssim":["962e931b-da12-42c1-98c4-78645c6781c3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Wholistic health care for persons using a rural outpatient clinic"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:22:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:44:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["947e006c-63e0-4efd-91a1-7b0f12cf84c5"],"hasLease_ssim":["87aa9756-621c-4bbd-bf98-61feafc4e3ed"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"additional_rights_info_tesim":["Alan Lumpkin"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min.
