The methodology is inductive and homiletic. Through the use of narrative material, the reader is taken on an intellectual, theological and emotional odyssey and is involved in the process of critical decision-making in the formation of a particular college chaplaincy.  The work culminates in a theological synthesis.  It includes an annotated bibliography and a list of suggested readings and resources. The author intervened with Transactional Analysis to identify factors that inhibited or facilitated the flow of energy.  Five hypotheses dealt with: 1) energizing ego states, 2) redirecting energy, 3) script decisions, 4) contracts, and 5) stroking.  In simulated situation and regular council meetings, data were gathered and redirecting energy considered.  Support was found that appropriately energized ego states facilitated decision-making, whereas inappropriately energized ego states inhibited decision-making. The results of the study supported this thesis and lead to the implication that churches need to understand that the manner in which decisions are made is as important as what is decided.
