Project"],"creator_tesim":["Smith, Linwood"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Training of","Health and religion","African American churches"],"abstract_tesim":["The mission of this project is to study the extent to which clergy promote health and wellness in the West-Mainline and Philadelphia Districts of the Philadelphia Annual Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC). In addition, the project highlights the impact of their health initiatives on the well-being of the congregants and members of the community served by the local church. Results of this project will help to define the most effective strategies for clergy in the promotion of health wellness interventions and to engage in the conversation of healthcare access and healthcare equity in their communities. The findings of this study will be presented to the Philadelphia Annual Conference of the AME Church through the Health Commission. Project"],"creator_tesim":["Correll, Merle"],"subject_tesim":["Chaplains","Health and religion","Church work with the sick"],"abstract_tesim":["The purposes of the study were to discover whether pastors did or did not touch their patients, to determine patients perceptions of the effects of being touched by their pastors, and to determine patients’ perceptions of the effects of being touched by physicians and nurses (other than in the normal course of treatment). The study explored patients’ positive and negative feelings and thoughts about being touched and the places on their bodies where they were touched. The goal of the study was to determine whether physical touch was or was not important to the patients. If it was affirmed that being physically touched by pastors, physicians, and nurses was important to patients, such information could be helpful to those professional people in ministering to patients. The methodology consisted of taking a taped interview from thirty randomly selected, adult patients from the hospital census who had been visited by their pastors. A pre-designed, structured, interview questionnaire was used by the investigator in the interviews. Church life was differentiated into three levels: Pastorally, Relationally, and Congregationally. A group of people were interviewed who had received some type of healing and their lives and were asked to share how the church community helped in the healing process. This project's goal is to offer recommendations for local church ministry and insights for pastors as they attempt to minister to persons facing crisis pregnancy decisions and their consequences.Through an interview process involving forty-six respondents, the project strives to identify the variety of factors perceived to have influenced decisions in response to crisis pregnancies, to describe the nature, and to assess the relative strength of such influences in the woman's experience.
