Divorce, extended separation, moving, retirement, and a host of other factors may precipitate grief reactions. The focus of this paper, however, is on grief experienced as the result of death of a loved one, or significant other person. Such grief will be defined and clarified in psychological terms, emphasizing the importance of resolving the grief by expressing the full range of emotions associated with it. It will be shown through several case studies that unresolved grief, the inhibition of natural feelings occasioned by the death of a loved one, may be a factor in marital crises. The study develops a theology and theory on marriage, traces the historical and literary formulation of premarital counseling as a practice, reports the results of a questionnaire survey of premarital counseling practices among clergy in the two Adventist conferences, and develops an alternative premarital counseling program which enables clergy to save time and enhance their premarriage counseling experiences.  The study of 100 clergy in two Adventist conferences investigated their programs, backgrounds, churches and materials characteristic of premarital counseling. Data from questionnaires returned by the clergy indicated: 1) 94.0 percent believe in premarital counseling; 2) only 18.0 percent felt comfortable doing premarital counseling; 3) the majority felt uncertain about the actual effectiveness of premarital counseling; 4) 84.0 percent require premarital counseling; but 5) 87.0 percent said they did not have a specific structured counseling program. The shift has enhanced the ends of marriage to acknowledge and include the importance of partnership and community. This project explains a contemporary understanding of the sacrament of marriage. Additionally, it presents the John Gottman research-based marital therapy process. It demonstrates the strong correlations between a Roman Catholic theology of marriage and Gottman's Sound Marital House theory. The tool served as a catalyst for building awareness and encouraging change. It provided a means by which couples could listen to each other concerning their shared needs and aspirations for marriage. At the outset of the project it was anticipated that couples would experience an increase in their level of marriage satisfaction. This proved not to be true in the manner expected.
