Nursing plays a critically important role in the delivery of patient spiritual care.  Drawing on both the history and literature of nursing and the descriptive statistical study of clinical nurses and nursing students, the project makes recommendations for clinical and education nursing sectors.  The descriptive study was designed to provide insight to demographic, educational, religious, and spiritual practices as related to the following dimensions of spiritual care: awareness, attitude, practice, and resource support.  Respondents indicated that spiritual care is important and that the practice of spiritual care tended to be more frequent among the theologically conservative, those who engage in personal spiritual practices and the older, more experienced nurse. Research included an examination of the wholistic concept, its biblical and theological bases, and its historical development.  Models of wholism are included in the project along with learning experiences of the participating pastors and physician.
