This was the result of a realization that the introduction was the most important part of any sermon preached at Morgan Grace Church. The project began with research of expository preaching. The emphasis of the research was on expository sermon introductions. Next, a best practices report was developed. Following the approval of the best practices report by expert evaluators, a series of expository sermons was developed through the first chapter of 1 John, utilizing the best practices for expository sermon introductions. The sermons were then preached to the congregation of Morgan Grace Church during the Sunday gathering. Finally, these sermons were evaluated by members of the congregation of Morgan Grace Church. The study, grounded in linguistics and language theory, examines fifty contemporary and denominationally significant sermons delivered over a ten-year period. The findings reveal that the sermon metaphors reflect the faith’s basic values, but they do so in ways that are conflictual. The metaphors are less prevalent, more commonplace, and more narrowly interpreted than might be expected in Unitarian Universalist preaching. The major implication of the study is that the overall metaphorical thrust of Unitarian Universalism is towards issues related to social justice and away from metaphors of transcendence, suggesting a de-ontologized and de-cosmologized emphasis."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860320750927872,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:27:05.471Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8c5033b9-9b48-4725-b10b-a41e90ea3946","accessControl_ssim":["2a95ff24-30f6-4d1e-9c78-cfbdfde1343e"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Typological preaching: Preaching to the dominant Myers-Briggs function in church members"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d14b1b8c-ab57-4268-a2dc-1c80420d0d09"],"hasLease_ssim":["39027558-f489-4537-a488-dd276fc3d822"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Correspondingly, do they rate the segments of sermons which were written to their inferior function as “speaking least specifically” to them? If the preliminary evidence suggests an affirmative answer to this question, then: (2) How successful can one preacher, who has one dominant function, be in crafting four different segments of the same sermon to speak to groups with each of the four dominant functions…Two converging arenas, that of a professional pastor, and that of an MBTI professional, intersect with this project…People who come to church are different in the ways they perceive and make judgments. As a result of this, communication becomes an issue. By making the basic assumption that the MBTI is an effective instrument in typing how people perceive and make judgments, it would seem also that communications can be designed to communicate to people more effectively by type. A minister who crafts his or her sermon according to type will have the ability to communicate more effectively than one who does not–that is the underlying presupposition in this project."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860289444642816,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:35.616Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"057860ef-b954-49b9-bad3-984c013892a6","accessControl_ssim":["9a3d7071-7514-45be-8da2-3b5232da0772"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Non-verbal language in preaching: a process for understanding between preachers and congregations"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3762a27b-671e-456f-a27f-dd57fd661ce0"],"hasLease_ssim":["b4892a8d-6c70-4b43-8dbf-61cb5ff5f440"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1980"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. To do this, a “semantic differential” scale was designed and tested in various congregations including those of a liturgical tradition as well as those without such a formal heritage. The scale was used by laypersons to indicate their responses to specific video-taped gestures of their minister in the process of preaching a sermon in worship which they attended. Scores from the scale were then used as a basis for discussions between the laity and their minister concerning the ways in which his gestures were being understood. Three congregations, along with their ministers, became more aware of the relationship between verbal content and non-verbal gestures used during the preaching event. The project was conducted with only those persons who had the capacity both to listen and to see what was happening during the sermon. The research phase produced an annotated bibliography of selected works in the field of leadership and an executive summary of selected biblical leadership concepts. Dr. Ray Van Neste evaluated both the annotated bibliography and the executive summary. During the second phase of the project, I developed a five-part sermon series to teach on God’s design for leadership. During the final phase, I preached the sermon series at Summertown Baptist Church, Summertown, Tennessee. Two expert preaching evaluators evaluated the sermon series. From this collective and interactive configuration a critical discrimen was created as a heuristic device to analyze contemporary hermeneutical and homiletical traditions to reveal which concepts might be appropriated and the limitations of those traditions in constructing an inclusive, emancipatory (Ana)baptist homiletic of community. It uses recent scholarship which claims that Israel came into existence in the Highlands around 1250 BCE as a federation of heterogenous groups of marginalized people. The author reconstructs both the person and the book of Amos by relying on works by Gottwald, Hopkins and Coote. This sociological approach provides the preacher with new insights into the Biblical tradition and illuminates numerous connections of consequence for today's society. Three sermons are included to illustrate such connections."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873126241009664,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:50:37.739Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
