At the same time churches are taking this transactional approach, “none” is the fastest growing religion in the United States marking the church’s ongoing decline. In their work we: a) hear from predominantly white congregations’ leaders in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, about how they and their congregations see their work with people living in poverty, b) engage in a theological dialogue with multiple researchers on what the Bible has to say about poverty in Deuteronomy, Ruth, the Prophets, and the Parables of Jesus, c) examine two current movements to get congregations out of their buildings and into their communities, d) look at the relational models that have influenced my secular work in poverty, and e) hear from two leaders in African American and Latino churches about how they engage with people living in poverty. Finally, incorporating elements from all these touchpoints, I lay out a path for church leaders to move their churches to relational models with people living in poverty, not to play the role of “Good Samaritan,” but because the church itself is in need of saving and has much to learn in and from the neighborhoods and communities it generally avoids."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860336331718656,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:27:20.331Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"22a5bbc8-652a-4bc5-aab9-d712f59a2407","accessControl_ssim":["9efa754b-7a41-4038-869a-8a535e683c7f"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Metaphor as muse: How Preaching Incarnates the Religious Ethos"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2d621c68-8b30-45d5-9b98-199db47e2ec6"],"hasLease_ssim":["e8cafe61-3eb4-4b09-993a-b9374b4e7db3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2018"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The study, grounded in linguistics and language theory, examines fifty contemporary and denominationally significant sermons delivered over a ten-year period. The findings reveal that the sermon metaphors reflect the faith’s basic values, but they do so in ways that are conflictual. The metaphors are less prevalent, more commonplace, and more narrowly interpreted than might be expected in Unitarian Universalist preaching. The major implication of the study is that the overall metaphorical thrust of Unitarian Universalism is towards issues related to social justice and away from metaphors of transcendence, suggesting a de-ontologized and de-cosmologized emphasis."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860320750927872,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:27:05.471Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d1d38bea-1dee-4705-baa4-68116457a454","accessControl_ssim":["97d1899f-4db4-4036-a3f6-7c05c7c832fa"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Hear our voices: pastoral care for the LGBTQ community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["19baf683-9cf4-4e0a-8d54-5fab8f753976"],"hasLease_ssim":["ad25f15c-05b6-419f-ab1d-e74be941f416"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2018"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Forty-four LGBTQ lay people completed the lay survey. One of the lay surveys was from a Spanish-speaking individual and it was translated into English. Oftentimes the pastor and lay leadership are not equipped with the skills sets and gifts needed to effect needed change…For this project, I chose to focus on Christian practices, which are good, life giving and intrinsic to the life of faith…Christian practices contribute to growth and revitalization in churches when engaged as individuals and communally. Practices can help us to develop narratives that shape our identity, sense of purpose and mission. By weaving reflections from the practice of ministry, stories from parishioners, sermons and engaging other authors, I will focus primarily on the practices of Discernment and Social Justice, drawing attention to important overlap with other practices like hospitality and worship (preaching)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860305134485504,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:50.578Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:06:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:52:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"491f9a30-59e7-410b-b9a2-41ef12a26353","accessControl_ssim":["ad7a17e3-c789-4ca4-851c-e03d67de414c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The constructing of a contemporary corrections ethic in the tradition of social contract theory : an extrapolation from the work of political philosopher John Rawls"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:06:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:47:08Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["19520264-9c33-4dfc-ae8d-52aa4d8fbe80"],"hasLease_ssim":["39c09cfa-297e-410e-832b-6027b00f2314"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. It considers the varied and complex challenges faced while attempting the humane treatment of those incarcerated. The tradition of social contract theory espoused in the writings of such political philosophers as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and more recently amplified in the work of the late Harvard political philosopher John Rawls will be explored and interpreted.
