To be known requires respect and understanding of their communities’ pastoral needs and religious practices. Sadly, many leaders have a colonial mentality that foments stereotypes and even prejudice toward Hispanics. The only way to move beyond this mentality is to sincerely enter into relationships with Latino(a)s, and understand how they see themselves. This respectful understanding must begin with our Church leaders. Latino/as want to share their cultural and religious practices that connect them to their families and ancestors. Although the Hispanic Catholics play a vital role in the life of the Church, barriers to inclusion remain. Hispanic Catholics want to fully participate in the Church’s mission to serve the whole community. They are eager to share their gifts through collaborative service in their parishes.\r\n\r\nIn this thesis project I reveal Hispanic communities that are already present but not often seen. I introduce their religious practices to the larger community including church leaders. I focus on the religious practice called Adoración Nocturna Mexicana (Mexican Nocturnal Adoration). A practice where members of the Mexican Catholic communities spend the night in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar where, like all Catholics, they worship the true presence of Jesus Christ in the consecrated hosts reposited in the Tabernacle and exposed in the monstrance on the altar during nocturnal adoration vigil. The study shows how Hispanics have historically and are presently practicing nocturnal adoration as part of their popular religious practices. More importantly, I explore what drives them toward these religious practices. By listening to their stories, I have heard their heartfelt voices as they express their needs and desires, spiritually, socially, and emotionally. I also demonstrate how they emulate the Samaritan woman at the well (John: 4-42), and like her are moved to evangelization when they also come to the realization of being known and therefore loved by Christ. \r\n\r\nI delve into the pastoral, social, and theological dimensions of Hispanic popular Catholicism and devotional practices, referred to as Santo praxis and lo cotidiano (the everyday). \r\n\r\nThe goal is to demonstrate how popular religious devotion is forged in the historical struggles of people who are oppressed. I describe in detail the rituals promoted by Adoración Nocturna Mexicana. \r\n\r\nAnd finally, share a theological reflection of the study’s findings and a pastoral response related to the importance of intercultural competence for effective leadership and accompaniment of Hispanic communities.\r\n"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["rmendez@student.ctu.edu"],"_version_":1854424409589153792,"timestamp":"2026-01-15T22:42:11.142Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:15:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:39:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7c797a12-0608-4618-ab8e-76bf333649a6","accessControl_ssim":["882be501-7fde-49a9-a78c-a00cdc1ece7f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["No Longer Servants, But Friends: Toward a Relational Approach to Spiritual Leadership Development"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:15:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:48:19Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0f2b2945-6846-44f1-a9a5-de34de7fb245"],"hasLease_ssim":["eda0f30d-9838-4291-b43c-e59b1a8d609f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Congregational Leadership"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Mark R. Using a shared leadership model and tools of appreciative inquiry, the pastor-researcher encouraged the LDT to identify gaps in the church’s leadership system and brainstorm and implement possible solutions. The intervention took place during the 2019-2020 program year and was, therefore, affected by the unanticipated challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the pastor-researcher’s move to a different church. This allowed the pastor-researcher to observe the LDT’s shift in mindset and methods under the pressure of these circumstances. The pastor-researcher observed the LDT’s process and outcomes and evaluated the members’ self-reported experiences via questionnaire, group interviews, and meeting transcripts. The key findings of the study illustrated that the LDT members experienced their process favorably, especially as evidenced by adopting the collaborative and systemic approaches they experienced in the intervention and applying these approaches to their work with other church leaders. Additionally, the study found that LDT members reported reduced anxiousness in their tasks, increased confidence in their effectiveness, and strong commitment to their shift in mindset, even in the face of the unanticipated crises. Most LDT members attributed these positive experiences to aspects of the intervention, including shared purpose, understanding of the church leadership system, collaborative leadership, and relationship with the pastor-researcher. The pastor-researcher identified opportunity for further study regarding long-term effects of such interventions and the impacts of interpersonal relationships, particularly with the pastor, on the experience and process of church leadership development."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.proquest.com/pqdtglobal/docview/2544234554"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["fc8e637d-6b92-421f-936e-4844dc981265"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134682112327680,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:39:03.555Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:04:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:10:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"47cc2c57-2e04-40dc-a984-f53d8be95646","accessControl_ssim":["39962b7a-7ab2-449d-9933-b4954796cc30"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Sacred Call Of A Deacon: The Role Of The Nominations And Lay Leadership Committee In The Corporate Discernment Of Deacons At First Baptist Church, Greenwood, South Carolina"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:04:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:14:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3b135cea-7276-43bc-8e91-3389463e9f77"],"hasLease_ssim":["dbbc9bc4-074c-4613-9379-8c5625f8012d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Mercer University, McAfee School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Karen Massey Ph.D.","Daniel Vestal D.D."],"year_tesim":["2020"],"location_tesim":["Georgia","United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Under the old model, committee members randomly select potential deacon nominees and immediately contact them about having their names placed into nomination. The following project thesis introduces the First Baptist Nominations and Lay Leadership Committee to a corporate discernment process that allows space for the movement of the Holy Spirit in the scared call of a deacon. The research methodology used in the project thesis involved the researcher being engaged as a participant observer. The researcher also used a combination of participation, observation, and interpretation of data collected from interviews as the primary qualitative research method. The researcher, working with the Nominations and Lay Leadership Committee, compared the answers to pre- and post-research questions after introducing the committee to the First Baptist Corporate Discernment Process. Through the introduction of the First Baptist Corporate Discernment Process, members of the Nominations and Lay Leadership Committee discovered a new way of xii selecting and nominating individuals to serve in the sacred call of a deacon. Members of the committee stated that the introduction of the corporate discernment process gave the committee the tools necessary to find spiritual consensus during the deacon selection and nomination process. The corporate discernment process also provided the space needed for the movement of the Holy Spirit as the committee sought spiritual consensus during the deacon selection and nomination process. Opportunities for additional study include the use of the corporate discernment process with other committees and boards of First Baptist. Further study also includes introducing the process to the diaconate. Additional opportunities include introducing the process to other Cooperative Baptist Fellowship churches in South Carolina as well as the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["http://hdl.handle.net/10898/12348"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791125333694480384,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:10:28.209Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:49:19Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:06:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dbd6c40f-dc80-4d63-928d-3d718bd17033","accessControl_ssim":["d20cceee-bae0-4cb7-8750-01accdbf5c72"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Stepping into the unknown : how imaging tools can help rebuild the church for a changed reality"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:49:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:25:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["cadf48f1-4cc3-4ef5-bfdc-1ed20a96afae"],"hasLease_ssim":["54f392ef-ad39-42e6-9f7b-40680f3fcb20"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lewis Parks"],"year_tesim":["2019"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Drawing upon Wesleyan ecclesiology, the author suggested sharing a basic overview for understanding the eschatological aspect of the Eucharist and applying the experience of the Eucharist at the start of meetings to inspire the development of a church vision in the ensuing meetings. Data from initial surveys, questionnaires, focus groups, and observations evidenced some positive effects on the amount of visioning that church leaders experienced. While further study is needed to be conclusive, the author affirmed the potential for this new approach to church visioning.[Note about entry: Abstract submitted to the Atla RIM database on behalf of the author. Membership levels, participation, and financial giving and support are shifting. Congregations often struggle to keep up with the rate of the change. Nowhere is this truer than in the financial realm, especially when they must consider downsizing their staff. This project examines classic staffing models, situations where downsizing has taken place, and a process for addressing staff transition times strategically. These help to address the challenge of how congregations can adjust with grace and thrive in the face of declining resources and changing realities.[Note about entry: Abstract submitted to the Atla RIM database on behalf of the author. What kinds of practical pastoral leadership steps does it take to help a church recover from a crisis and refocus mission and ministry? How is a wounded congregation led into hope-filled healing? Researching the congregation’s social context and history gives insight into the need for refocused mission and ministry. Preaching an eight-week sermon series on Nehemiah and processing it through narrative research and focused ministry action established the foundation for a wounded congregation to rebuild. Adapting change to the church committee structure provides renewal and creates space to received hope-filled healing as culture is shifted from internal to external, from “us” to “Christ.”[Note about entry: Abstract submitted to the Atla RIM database on behalf of the author. Every Christian congregation has a system of governance, an agreed upon method to administer and manage the day to day operations, and exercise the ministry in good order. Many congregations and pastors face great challenges and unrest because of church governance issues. This issue is critical for pastoral health and longevity, as well as, congregational vitality and viability. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structure interview with seven pastors from various denominations who served their congregations as senior pastors for ten years or longer. The literature review and analysis of the seven interviews focused on three key areas: the implementation of the Carver Policy Governance Model into the Congregation, the unique advantages of the Carver Policy Model, and the unique challenges of the Carver Policy Model. This study concluded that there are eight components necessary to implement a policy based Board of Directors as the governing body of a congregation: outside resourcing, biblically based content, special pastoral character, full implementation of the Carver Model with the addition of an elder’s board (or its equivalent), clear separation of the administration and spiritual components, a high level of relational trust, a continual use of evaluation, and the implementation of teams."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["http://covenantlibrary.org/etd/2018/Brand_Timothy_DMin_2018.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131613506043904,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:50:17.104Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
