The first chapter presents views of specific theologians on the subject of suffering and the expected role of lay ministers to meet the needs of the suffering.  Subsequent chapters provide practical considerations for lay ministers.  The final chapter presents the development, execution, and assessment of the training program. A survey United States Army chaplains currently stationed in the Republic of South Korea indicates that a majority of these chaplains are survivors of profound loss during childhood. Of these chaplains, 36.3 percent reported an alcoholic parent and 68.7 percent reported an experience of loss due to alcohol that had positvie impact on their professional identity. Biblical theology and social-science data form the context in which loss can be integrated. The project implements and evaluates religious drama as a viable proclamation tool addressing an important congregational issue.  This thesis examines the issue of suffering using the book of Job.  It establishes a biblical and theological understanding of suffering and addresses the issue through an original drama, sermon and Bible study. Evaluation consists of questionnaires and interviews of drama participants, Bible study members and congregation. We studied three traditional responses that have been made at various intervals to the problem of evil, that of Leibniz, Augustine, and Calvin, the thought of Walter Kaufmann on the problem of evil, and three non-traditional responses to the problem made by Spinoza, Schleiermacher, Unamuno, and David Ray Griffin.  In a ten week study group we addressed the philosophical problem of evil with a group of interested laypersons. Suffering represents various subjective emotions reflecting absent validation for the pastors. Clergy question their meaningfulness as well as confront the violation of deeply-held expectations regarding their vocation and results of their labors. Clergy seek to improve their circumstances by turning to spiritual, social, emotional, and/or intellectual resources. Greater healing may result, though, as clergy become 'co-creators' of meaning with God. Clergy may eventually integrate the suffering for an enriched faith perspective and enhanced gifts for spiritual leadership. Using the pro-active (qualitative) research method, the author examined works of modern fiction, developed a biblical/theological foundation, and led the group in six sessions based on films, short stories, and a novel.
