One must seek to understand the historical and psychosocial dimensions of religious involvement as well.  The method of study for the thesis was the psychosocial, historical, and doctrinal comparison of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Unification Church, and Protestant evangelicals. Present practice is not consistent with historical Christianity nor with Wesleyan Methodism.  To be actively involved in the healing of the broken body of Christ this part of their heritage must be understood and reclaimed. Meeting with a reflection group, representative of the congregation, Methodist eucharistic heritage, ecumenical and liturgical renewal, and local customs were studied. The church year provided the vehicle through which themes of the eucharist were celebrated.  Taped interviews with the congregation following each service helped assess progress. The paper provides an overview of recurring issues in the history of interpretation and methods that various techniques of interpretation answer them. It includes background information on the meaning of deafness and some of the characteristics of deaf persons and deaf society and a brief history of religious work with the deaf, particularly from the United Methodist viewpoint.  Involvement of persons in the local church, especially securing the approval of the official bodies of the church and recruitment and training of persons to work with the deaf are important. A questionnaire was given before and after the course.
