The relationship between smaller membership churches and the presbytery is of particular concern. The author used surveys and multiple intervention strategies with smaller membership congregations within the Presbytery of Geneva, New York. Her conclusions include that transformational leadership that promotes healthy, vital, and tranformed communities of faith is paramount. This thesis was tested with pre- and post-study surveys of A welcoming life participants. Results show that participants changed their beliefs about hospitality and God's desire for them to share their faith and their behavior regarding the frequency with which they share their faith and invite others to their churches. Seven African style intergenerational Bible studies were created to facilitate the healing, sustaining, guiding, and reconciling of Jesus within the church family. To better understand attitudes about cohabitation, selected young adults were invited into a dialogue. Storytelling, brief counseling, biblical topics, and social interaction were coordinated to encourage group participation and self-learning. At the conclusion of the study, cohabitating couples revealed their decisions to marry or not to marry. The author interviewed couples fracing those challenges to gain insights into how families navigate the itinerancy with integrity while honoring the multiple covenants involved. Using sermons, devotional manuals, journals, memoirs, letters and other primary source material, the author rediscovers and reconstructs the spiritual theology and spiritual practices of nineteenth-century Unitarians and Transcendentalists. He creatively re-appropriates and re-packages these practices for use by contemporary Unitarian Universalists, including teaching handouts and syllabi for congregational and graduate school classes.
