A wide range of artistic media was introduced into the worship, education and spiritual formation activities of the Gateway Christian Church, of Los Angeles, California. These media included the visual arts, drama, photography and multimedia presentations. The impact of the arts was evaluated through questionnaires, personal interviews and direct observations. Spiritual formation, as measured by increased hospitality and inclusiveness, was positively impacted by the project. Originally the thesis question was: what wisdom can be learned from the ways the United Methodist Church and the Episcopal Church have engaged in debates and made decisions relating to the ordination of women and the ordination of gay and lesbian persons and the interactions of the respective denominations with their global partners? However, as this study has unfolded it became clear that the first question to be addressed is that of how our denominations, in the context of our histories, the social issues and ecclesial issues that have and continue to shape our lives, can come together as we seek to become transformed communities. Therefore this study explores a theological understanding of the democratic polities of the United Methodist Church and the Episcopal Church and reflects on our movement towards 'life together'."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799714867312066560,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:37:25.809Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:54:34Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:30:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0fd6b244-3710-40d7-8867-23e8b58412f4","accessControl_ssim":["b9eec0b2-2f5a-40ae-a333-17b79144a87a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The altar: tradition and transformation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:54:33Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:34:29Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c0b8bba6-b0b9-4651-9f63-9ef9467757a1"],"hasLease_ssim":["81654ca0-77fa-4781-8364-20a594a9b548"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lewis A Parks"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The author finds that often change and chaos can be a positive element in the process of the growth and self-esteem that is necessary to move from maintenance to mission."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718282656219136,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:31:42.936Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:54:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:35:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f112ef9f-a8ba-4796-86f0-d84dcaa125fd","accessControl_ssim":["99aa37fa-25a1-45a7-9c1d-8747d113fac5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Campus ministry funding: the changing relationship between annual conferences and extension ministries"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:54:03Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:00:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d6cb69ca-9387-449c-9ced-9726061361bc"],"hasLease_ssim":["6ffd48d1-ddcc-4a19-82a7-cccb5bdc6cfc"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lovett H Weems"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The project explores the critical relationship between arts and theology, as explored in a praxis model of integration, through pottery. Writings of theologians John Calvin, Paul Tillich, Michael Polanyi, Douglas John Hall, and artists M. C. Richards, Paulus Berehnson, Catherine Kapikian, and Daniel de Montmollin, Brother of Taize, are considered. Church members, staff, and participants in More than a meal program at Idlewild Church, a program for persons who are homeless or living in compromised situations, were invited to join a series of pottery classes, resulting in nearly sixty persons working together every week, over a seven-week period, concluding with an exhibit of 652 finished pots. The final chapter of this thesis includes evaluative remarks from the Idlewild Presbyterian Church community, and specific suggestions for churches or communities who wish to establish a pottery ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715627630329856,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:49:30.906Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:54:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:51:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8a541bfe-049d-4b63-b887-96a31938ca9e","accessControl_ssim":["ecb4899b-a18f-435b-ae24-3c78aebfe03b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The feasibility of creating a tool that will help the members of a congregation to experience Wesley's 'Earn all you can, save all you can, give all you can' as a means for growth in personal stewardship"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:54:02Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:11:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3a0a490a-ba15-473b-a40c-443dd8e6c508"],"hasLease_ssim":["cdde13a9-a17d-44a4-8c73-98c55d73120a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David F McAllister-Wilson"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min.
