This project is one that studied and utilized a learned understanding of the system dynamics of two small church families; then incorporated specific spiritual disciplines, such as, Christ-centered spiritual acts of worship, biblical infusion in the church's life, and pointed spiritual practices at places of corporate conflict. The Virginia United Methodist Annual Conference offered to welcome those made homeless by this storm. This thesis examines ways in which local churches responded to and reached out to evacuees re-located into their community. It includes a working theology of mission. An embrace of biblical hospitality moves mission from a 'helper/helpee' relationship to a transformational mission in which all are changed. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of brain injury on one's church attendance and involvement and to investigate how the church can minister to this growing population. Individual interviews were conducted with eighteen brian injury survivors that represented a demographic cross-section of the brain injury population. The study revealed that only 28% of participants had returned to active participation with their church post-injury. The participants were religiously diverse, including some unaffiliated with either a church or synagogue. Using a questionnaire, residents were interviewed regarding their sources of hope and comfort, religious participation, spiritual practices, psychological age and fear of death. Traditionally, the church recognizes and accepts the gifts of shouting, singing, and preaching but a major part of the congregation draws the line of acceptance with other gifts, such as prophecy or speaking in tongues, that have begun to manifest during services. The research revealed that Jesus engaged in the traditional Jewish practices of prayer, hospitality, Sabbath observance, pilgrimage, Temple and synagogue worship, and festival observance. The research also revealed that Jesus engaged in asceticism, solitude, feasting (not fasting), and open table fellowship.
