The author researched clergy stress in one District of the Virginia Annual Conference through an ethnographic study. The author presents Sabbath rest as the theological foundation for a response to clergy stress and burnout. The long term healing responses to stress and burnout presented are preventive care, a retreat based Sabbath rest mininstry, and clergy spiritual support groups. The particular subjects under investigation are 24 affluent American University students who chose to participate in an 'alternative spring break' to Honduras, Nicaragua, Cuba, Chiapas Mexico, Zambia or Vietnam. Relying on interviews and observation, the author concluded that these short impressions provided the students with an occasion for reexamination of their own lives and an opportunity for experiencing transcendence. In most congregations less than 3% of their membership attend the Sunday services. Many attempts to establish new forms of contemporary worship have failed, either because the approaches were too demanding and time consuming or because they were focused on limited target groups and therefore could not have an impact on the congregation as a whole. Based on a creative adaptation of the biblical and Lutheran liturgical heritage the author has developed and implemented a new form of worship that has proved to be effective, appealing and visionary. These insights were applied to the design of the ministry tool--syllabi for three years of courses. I plan to present this project ot the Bishops and Cabinets of the IGRAC and West Virginia Annual Conferences with the hope that it will be used as a guide in effectively making cross-cultural/cross-racial appointments.
