Suburban, homogeneous,minority-led churches are an oasis and a safe-haven for ethnic minorities who relocatefrom urban centers. Yet, as outposts of Christ’s kingdom, these churches are charged withthe responsibility of reaching across ethnic lines to make disciples of all nationsbeginning with the neighborhood in which the congregation worships. The assumptionthat leading a homogeneous congregation to diversify is the same regardless of thechurch’s location and the ethnicity of its pastor ignores the long history of race relationsin America. Minority pastors who lead suburban, ethnically homogeneous churches needkey leadership qualities to diversify their congregations.Through semi-structured interviews with nine African American pastors fromdifferent denominations and different regions of the United States, this qualitative studyconcluded that biblical conviction, cultural competence, conflict resolution skill, andemotional intelligence are key leadership qualities necessary for diversifying suburban, ethnically homogeneous, minority-led congregations. This dissertation is divided into five sections. The first section provides arationale for this study and explains the significance of the project given the novelty ofthe topic and the lack of specific research on the topic. The second section discusses therelevant literature concerning biblical conviction, cultural competence, conflict resolutionskill, and emotional intelligence. The third section describes the research procedure, offers a justification for using in-depth interviews as the preferred research method, andaddresses the limitations of the study. The fourth section of this dissertation presents theresults from the interviews which substantiate and confirm the project’s hypotheses. Thelast section gives implications for ministry, shares the delimitations of the study, andmakes recommendations for future research."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130947051061248,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:41.523Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:55:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:29:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"51bca1f5-05d9-4cae-a122-23cf77107092","accessControl_ssim":["11ced69e-636a-4893-8a58-f5b0a20995d0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Implementation And Impact Of A Hybrid Church Model At Brookridge Baptist Church During A Global Pandemic"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:55:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:31:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a180a8f8-cf27-4490-896d-bd78e7d9da4e"],"hasLease_ssim":["8fcb57b3-98ff-4fcc-893c-335167fe353a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Craig Schill D.Min.","John C. In the days and weeks to follow, almost every sector of life around the world was impacted as the virus became a global pandemic, and unprecedented restrictions were enacted for public safety. Businesses and schools were closed; sporting events were cancelled; gatherings were restricted; and face coverings were mandated. Overnight, churches were forced to adapt and embrace various digital media platforms to create an online presence and develop new strategies to minister to their congregations. This research project examined the implementation of a hybrid (in-person and online) church ministry model at Brookridge Baptist Church in Plover, WI using two descriptive surveys. The study sought to discover if the hybrid church model could help meet spiritual needs and facilitate personal church involvement during both a period of restricted gatherings and the ensuing phases of the COVID-19 crisis, as well as a part of the regular ministry of the church going forward. Two descriptive surveys were administered during two different points in time during the pandemic formed the basis of the research. The first survey was given in April 2020 during a time of state-mandated restricted gatherings, and a second in December 2021 while the pandemic continued in its variant forms."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130303768559616,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:29:28.041Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:55:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:37:49Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b545cbe8-e209-4fba-8eea-a2c7f091fa70","accessControl_ssim":["f333220d-0e7a-4a95-9a11-56b4bc50df70"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An Assessment Of The Exodus Of The Second Generation Believers From The Mar Thoma Church In America"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:55:40Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:22:01Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2d7c3470-86fe-4a84-917a-0009b787244d"],"hasLease_ssim":["411504d3-8791-43a8-a1df-63a32c5756e9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["D. The community is, now, comprised of people withmultiple ethnicities, languages, socio-economic statuses, religions, and politicalideologies.Utilizing the case study method for this research, three churches, whosecommunities had gone through significant demographic changes and who successfullynavigated from homogenous to multicultural churches, were identified and studied.Senior pastors who went through the revitalized transition were interviewed. Thisresearch sought to discover how these churches, from these pastors’ perspective, acted toreflect the demographics of the community, how the congregations became engaged inthe transition, how the senior pastor led through the tension of change, what musicalchanges were employed, and what cultural preferences of the homogenous church weresubjugated to accommodate multicultural acceptance for the church community"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129985746993152,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:24:24.752Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:55:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:26:24Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"306da970-2500-4391-908b-49bec9e61ee5","accessControl_ssim":["f28fbe4b-a170-4fad-8850-fa3973c7180c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Leadership Lessons On Form And Function From Pastors Of Large Chinese Churches In North America"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:55:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:32:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ec37be25-b3f4-4a58-ac97-476962529247"],"hasLease_ssim":["03fbc26d-4812-46d6-902b-710ec43d5487"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Bob Rowley D.Min.","Brian Lam D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2022"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Shih-Ju Chang"],"subject_tesim":["Church renewal","Asian Americans","Church growth","Assimilation of new church members","Church work with immigrants"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["For the past four decades, Chinese churches in North America have seen rapidgrowth as Chinese immigrants emigrated to North America. A popular myth holds that the marriages of most couples raising aspecial needs child end in divorce. However, numerous studies show this is not alwaysthe case; in fact, in many instances, raising a special needs child makes a couple’smarriages stronger. This study focused on researching and identifying key factorscontributing to marital satisfaction among couples raising a special needs child.Previously, there has been little research done on this topic, a fact which inspired theresearcher to look into this phenomenon. The discovery of these major factors will behelpful to couples raising special needs children, pastors, and marriage counselors. To gather the necessary data for this study, three different methods were used.First, descriptive surveys were administered to discover qualified couples who fulfilledthe established criteria. Second, the quantitative research method was employed throughsurveys that were used to identify key factors contributing to the marital satisfaction ofthe volunteering couples. Third, the qualitative research method was used throughpersonal interviews with the selected couples to identify the major factors thatcontributed to their satisfaction in their marriages. The results of this research support the association between maritalsatisfaction among Korean American couples raising a special needs child andcommunication, spirituality, and commitment. This study and its discoveries shouldprovide valuable resources to pastors, leaders, and marriage counselors who are in aposition to assist couples who struggle in their marriage while raising a special needschild."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130790008979456,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:37:11.756Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:54:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:41:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"df72d3e4-973f-4008-aef8-dc87b1697d20","accessControl_ssim":["bd8d46e0-cb4c-42ea-ac59-eefee4e311c1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The National Council Of Certified Dementia Practitioners' (Nccdp) Alzheimer'S Disease And Dementia Care Seminar For Use In The Local Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:54:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:31:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["86e40afe-b6ac-4f17-b786-4fe0110890e2"],"hasLease_ssim":["8fe518dc-42a0-4967-a131-1b95cf197c12"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jeanne R. Currently usedin professional healthcare settings, the curriculum was applied to the local church settingby leading interested church pastors, ministry leaders, volunteers, and family members orcaregivers of those who have been diagnosed with AD through the NCCDP training.Armed with a greater knowledge and understanding of the needs of Alzheimer’s patients, the long-term hope behind the project was that these church leaders and the churches they serve would then be able to develop more intentional programs to minister to theseindividuals and their families. In total, thirty-two participants from three different churches and one Zoomsession attended the seminar, which was conducted four times. An identical survey ofquestions rated on a Likert scale was given to the contributors before and after theseminar, providing the quantitative data for evaluation of the seminar’s effectiveness. The statistical analysis did reveal a significant improvement in how participants rated theirattitudes, perceptions, and knowledge of some facts regarding AD and the specificspiritual, physical, and emotional needs of individuals with AD. The findings lead to theconclusion that the NCCDP seminar could be an effective ministry tool for ministers andchurches interested in cultivating opportunities to serve the needs of individuals with ADin their communities, along with their families."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131077208702976,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:41:45.651Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
