Recognizing that conversation shapes and reflects the cultural context, this manual is presented with the objective of locating the congregation's conversation in the narrative of Scripture. As that narrative begins to shape the conversation of the local church, a new culture is formed within the church and a new engagement with the wider culture is made possible in which the church carries out its vocation as the people of God. Paul's epistles served as the primary basis of research in discerning the pattern of a congregational narrative in the story of Christ's body. This manual, then, is about an adventure in conversation. Congregations, as bodies called upon to express the story of Christ's body in their shared lives, have both an opportunity and an obligation to demonstrate the particular shape of community that God has crafted for missional witness in North America. To that end, this manual presents conversation as an instrument of transformation. The images, symbols, metaphors, and parables at play in the conversation of the local congregation can be formidable when embodied in their practice of being church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135566152073216,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:06.641Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:50:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-11T12:11:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"cbae17a0-509a-408c-b248-e972fd0b3214","accessControl_ssim":["7cc15ae7-51c7-4e76-970d-04dfe76b27bf"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Desafíos y oportunidades para la iglesia hispana de tradición reformada en una era secular"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:50:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-11T12:11:03Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d7f62f1e-47f7-4bb0-ad8d-e148a2f07dd3"],"hasLease_ssim":["e791998f-41f6-4fd4-88b8-7d681a5405c3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Alvin Padilla Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2022"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Particular study is directed toward contemporary thought in business, homiletics, and education as they impact content and style of communication in preaching and teaching in the church. This project demonstrates that technological changes in a post industrial society do not deter the Gospel from being preached and taught in reasoned passionate testimony apprehendable to all who will listen. One survey concluded that at any given time more than 30,000 Protestant churches in the United States are in serious conflict. This equates to about one church in twelve in serious conflict. At the same time, there is a growing body of knowledge in the field of family systems theory that can assist a person's managing of his/her life in a way that can influence these congregations toward a higher level of functioning. The purpose of this project was to discern the potential benefit to parish pastors involved in a limited experiential process using family systems theory as the basis for teaching and interpreting their family of origin issues for personal growth. The Preface to the paper provides an example of a highly anxious and low functioning church. It is a true story not unlike those of many churches in America today. It provides a point of reference for the first chapter which introduces a family systems view or theory as a model for interpreting the behavior of congregations and their members. Since Bowen's theory is based on an evolutionary biological model of living organisms and since the church from the beginning has been a living entity, the theory has been used to interpret and explain life within churches and synagogues. The third chapter describes a project in which clergy were asked to participate in a limited number of small group sessions over a 4-6 month period. This blend grounds the author' s basic assumption : values determine what people notice and influence their spirituality. The principles of Ignatian spirituality-awareness, intelligence, reasonableness, responsibility, and love-as postulated by Bernard Lonergan, S.J., and five basic Lucan values-dependence on God, compassion , inclusiveness, right use of possessions and nonviolence-are highlighted in the manuscript and provide a manageble retreat framework for both director and retreatants. The manual includes prayer exercises, guidelines for the discernment of spirits from a cultural context, practical suggestions for preparing and directing the retreat, and examples from the experience of retreatants."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135632117989376,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:09.551Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:49:48Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:54:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ac58e434-d8f9-48f3-a039-4735788d692f","accessControl_ssim":["cf90ff3b-9ece-497f-bd8b-21836cbfede3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["People with aids : a hospice chaplain uses story as a means of education for spiritual care"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:49:47Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:06:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["33478fb4-1b6f-49c7-bda3-54dd12c73c13"],"hasLease_ssim":["d2218714-b669-43c3-9a65-5387ce7cdd9c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1996"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Stories of real people with AIDS, who utilized hospice care at the end of life, were gathered by a hospice chaplain, and can be used for individual growth or in a group setting.Ten stories are given in chapter format. The stories reflect the diversity within the AIDS population: injection drug users, gay men, heterosexual individuals, transsexuals, and those who care for people with AIDS.Each chapter consists of the primary story of the person with AIDS, followed by theological reflections, concluding with a page of reflection questions.Theological themes include, but are not limited to: the role and scope of the church; creation; death and its impact on family, children, caregivers; healing; sin; inherited brokenness; angels unaware; forgiveness; heaven; presence of God; community; rejection/acceptance; disease; eternal life; grief and loss; evangelism; rituals of inclusion; and, resurrection.Reflection questions are based upon the author's long experience with small groups. The questions build from chapter one to ten as the group is first introduced to the subject matter of AIDS and to each other, closing with termination of the group at the conclusion of the ten sessions. An annotated bibliography on AIDS literature is included as a resource, as are appendices on an overview of spiritual care to the person with AIDS, and small group guidelines. The project shows that by using story, a person or a small group can learn about providing spiritual care to the person with AIDS."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1615"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135636901593088,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:14.113Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:49:48Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:54:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bc5af19a-1dfa-4914-a579-6f572f4712af","accessControl_ssim":["52f362af-a9fc-42d4-b92c-cae571b16f30"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Ignatian spirituality in a Presbyterian context : a suggested Presbyterian use of the Ignatian method of spiritual exercises"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:49:47Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:33:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2054b272-8cf6-4f36-9e22-fe4dc007cd28"],"hasLease_ssim":["a6af6197-98b4-4c3d-bff3-c12578970f57"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. One day, while visiting the local library, I came upon John Sanford's helpful book entitled The Kingdom Within. In this volume, the author stresses the need to 'journey inward', that is, to listen to· the 'inner voice' of the unconscious. Here the work of the Holy Spirit may be experienced as a gentle· prodding toward growth and wholeness, a wholeness such as is perfectly seen in Jesus Christ. Here there may be found a whole realm often denied by the proponents of a more materialistic and scientific view of life. Within modern times, Sanford points out, 'the importance of humankind's inner world has been lost.' But the early church always held that humankind's 'conscious life was immersed in a sea of spiritual reality.' The discovery of the unconscious, Sanford holds, has challenged the materialistic view of humankind and its negation of the New Testament."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135651624648704,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:28.154Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:49:48Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:55:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e488e0ae-f1f8-4a17-9e19-be9ff2b01dab","accessControl_ssim":["1d9bc991-21d5-442f-8a42-94890c372a07"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Metaphors in pastoral care and counseling : utilizing the therapeutic model of David Grove"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:49:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:40:12Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["409e621c-7e50-4e66-8cca-78d38ad6b1b1"],"hasLease_ssim":["7e6f385d-7b14-4992-9322-3aa3790d40e2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The model uses the modern therapeutic technique of Dr. David Grove in conjunction with the biblical psalms of lament.David Grove maintains that people use metaphors to describe past traumatic experiences, and that these metaphors provide the key for healing these wounds, or the 'wounded child within,' in the past where they first occurred. Grove's therapeutic process emphasizes careful attention to the office setting, healing the wounded child within in the past, allowing the client's use of metaphor to express the trauma, and strict regard to the 'clean' language used by the therapist. Grove also contends that the wounded child within is 'frozen' in time, and the therapist must help guide the client through and beyond that experience so that healing may occur. This is achieved through an u nderstanding of the information stored in the child within, the memories which describe the environment outside the child's body, and the bodily boundaries described in metaphors."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135700117094400,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:55:14.400Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
