Chapter Three presents a contemporary study of the pastoral care that has been demonstrated in the Classis of Pleasant Prairie over the past 50 -- 60 years.Chapter Four brings together the three previous chapters with additional support for the importance of pastoral care by the elders, pastors, and deacons. This project identifies pastoral care as an important aspect of the ministry of the Reformation. This pastoral care has a scriptural basis for it. The study challenges the church of today to be more intentional in evaluating how it is carrying out this ministry and to understand the significance that this ministry has to the spiritual health of individuals and to the overall health of the church."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1612"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135663480897536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:39.461Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:43:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:50:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"057dc039-6521-47fd-a049-926cf6bcc692","accessControl_ssim":["32acd708-3638-4337-99ef-9b987d3c220c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The fourth human endowment : a spiritual autobiography"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:43:02Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:16:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1060caee-9e15-4df3-a3b5-a906a09b6ef8"],"hasLease_ssim":["355903a8-f351-41ec-82a6-c5a7279628c3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Chapter Two describes the author's personal conflict with the decretal theism of his youth. It starts with childhood perceptions of God while growing up in a Reformed context. The chapter travels through a personal history with Dort and concludes with the discovery of the writings of Stephen Covey and John Sanders. Chapter Three discusses the history of the Canons of Dort, questioning the doctrine of reprobation. It goes into a pastoral evaluation of decretal theism and concludes with a study of the contemporary influence of the teachings of Dort in the RCA. Chapter Four compares the decretal theism of the Westminster Confession and the Canons of Dort with the teachings of modern business consultant and best-selling author, Stephen Covey. This chapter asserts that, especially in today's context, emphasis needs to placed more on human responsibility than on God's eternal decrees. Chapter Five compares decretal theism to relational theism. It discusses the risk-free nature of Dort and compares it to the relational 'risk' theism of John Sanders. Chapter Six discusses various implications decretal theism may have for the RCA. The suggestion is made that we further examine our theology as perhaps one of the contributing causes of our decline. Chapter Seven concludes the paper with statistics of decline in the RCA. The suggestion is again made that perhaps our lack of growth is due, at least in part, to our lack of motivation to evangelize. It may be that our lack of motivation is due to our theology that does not put enough emphasis on human responsibility."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135388527493120,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:50:17.245Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:43:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:54:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bb88845f-2b1a-447f-819a-b91a3b6f2196","accessControl_ssim":["699bcdc7-aca0-4230-9c92-a23c53cde4e2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Mission in Japan using Japanese mythology and the Bible : a guide to cross-cultural pastoral care"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:43:02Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:31:54Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4d17efb9-be97-4fbe-bb25-32ef5ab77ac2"],"hasLease_ssim":["a7ec7621-6b73-4b1f-932e-5277a5c97fb9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"location_tesim":["Japan"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Yet as vital as team ministry is to the church, a disheartening number of those teams end up accomplishing very little and either end their time together in frustration or continue in m ediocrity. While there are doubtless many reasons for this poor performance record, they often boil down to poor leadership of the team. Teams are vital to church ministry and leaders are vital to team ministry so it is essential for churches to train team leaders in skills that enable effective and encouraging leadership. Based on research, interviews and experience five characteristics of effective team leadership immerge: great leaders glow, great leaders love, great leaders vision, great leaders plan and great leaders coach. Training in each of these characteristics can help ensure that ministry teams in a church have the leadership they need to prosper. The 5 Tools of Team Leadership: A Collegial and Collaborative Leadership Development Process is a learning process designed around those 5 leadership characteristics and a small group of leaders lead by a coach or mentor. In group sessions and between group sessions the participants learn from each other and from a set of teaching materials that expound on those 5 leadership characteristics how to lead their ministry teams more effectively. The process absolutely depends on a group dynamic of openness, love and acceptance. The process invites the Holy Spirit to use the process to maximize the leadership potential of each individual."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1582"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135580319383552,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:20.152Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:43:02Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:55:02Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dae4d5fc-5eab-4eeb-a3cd-acf1aa5ebbe4","accessControl_ssim":["3d0e4876-4c96-4ab4-8c4b-f57abcc4f7f6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Generation X meets Saint Dominic"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:43:01Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:23:29Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2ba8e985-2e56-4541-aa41-4a6534cbcbb2"],"hasLease_ssim":["e7a7d073-7cef-4407-a915-f8318c3b591a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Recorded here are a personal account of my interest in congregational CPE, a rationale for congregational CPE, a curriculum, feedback from students noting progress (or lack thereof) in developing emotional intelligence, other models of congregational CPE, what others have written about this type of program, theological reflection on this education process, and a conclusion naming some benefits and questions based upon this unit of congregational CPE. Each of these pieces records an aspect of an education process that is greater than the sum of its parts. The real project occurred as students and I met for several hours on Thursdays for six months to engage with each other in ways for each of us to become better pastors. The stories of their growth illustrate how their development of emotional intelligence informed their pastoral identity and competence as leaders in their places of ministry. They grew into themselves and their call as pastoral leaders, a process for which I am grateful."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135414216556544,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:50:41.744Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:42:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:54:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"cbaaf896-54f8-49d9-89ef-fc033ecfcc65","accessControl_ssim":["9716c7c5-fc7c-416e-8417-b063d560890d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The cry for clarity : coaching vocational conversations about ministry leadership"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:42:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:59:12Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a79b9f2c-934b-4e29-93bc-490f027401a1"],"hasLease_ssim":["ad4558c8-cd8a-47e3-807a-63ced5f2b6bc"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Foundational contributions come from H. Will these three often disparate pieces weave together into new understandings that can improve the pastor's own functioning? This project is designed to begin to answer these questions.Chapter One presents the history of the development of Murray Bowen's Family Systems Theory and the eight main concepts of this theory. Chapter Two will be an in-depth examination of my family of origin which will discuss the patterns of family functioning I discovered as I completed my family genogram, similar to a family tree.Chapter Three will briefly examine the history of one of the congregations I served in an attempt to discover the roots of that particular congregation's functioning. Chapter Four will be an in-depth examination of the biblical account of the patriarch Jacob/Israel.Chapter Five will integrate these three elements, my family story, the congregational story, and the biblical story, to demonstrate how the common elements that existed in all three of these stories led to a 'Eureka' moment for my life and ministry. Chapter Six, the concluding chapter will describe how other pastors, if they are already familiar with Bowen Theory and family emotional processes, may begin to apply the approach described in this paper within their own lives and ministries to increase their ability to regulate anxiety and self-differentiate within the life of the congregation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135617171587072,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:55.297Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:42:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:52:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"423da692-2253-41d3-9506-b4f5ad3041c4","accessControl_ssim":["94540332-58b2-46f9-b048-37027f76b3c3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A Christian response to religious violence : a curriculum addressing non-retaliation and peace in northern Nigeria"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:42:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:03:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c358b43c-491b-46b5-a347-06c4547b867f"],"hasLease_ssim":["fea92186-f929-4f89-848f-576aa1d16ebf"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"location_tesim":["Nigeria"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Jesus' point of emphasis in his teaching is that his followers should avoid violence, whether capital punishment or engaging in destructive war in his name. Jesus taught his followers this new approach because he knew that those who were committed to following him would surely have enemies who would physically attack them. He knew that as humans we are bound to react to our enemies in the form of anger, sorrow, or defensiveness. Graduates of Pastors' School, Jos, and their congregations will have a mandate to apply Jesus' teaching on peace and forgiveness in their relationship with Muslims in northern Nigeria.
