In the United States, church membership, worship attendance and the number of baptisms continue to decline, funding for connectional ministries continues to decline and grows weaker in the current economic crisis; and the 'warm heart' of John Wesley's movement has become a 'contented heart' of institutional inertia; and the 1970's organization and structure we live with is not sufficient, nimble or responsive to the fast changing 21st Century world we inhabit. The missional heritage of the people called Methodist offers clues to a way forward for United Methodists who long to be part of a missional movement once again. Although John Wesley would not have recognized the term 'missional' in the way it is understood today, he instinctively shaped his movement around the development of missional identity (accountable discipleship in community) and missional engagement with those on the periphery of society (submitting to become more vile). Perhaps by reclaiming those early impulses and shaping them for relevance in the 21st century, United Methodist congregations can reclaim their missional heritage and break the institutional inertia that keeps them operating under the assumptions of Christendom."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135458268282880,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:51:23.755Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:52:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5a6f202c-c15d-4944-b79d-14c3b803b5ce","accessControl_ssim":["e4c481bb-a9b4-4f2e-aa14-f8f36486484b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A tale of two cities divided : in search of radical reconciliation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:47:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["219c555b-cfe7-4106-a95c-14577d0f872c"],"hasLease_ssim":["bb2f2c85-0e8c-4574-aa8c-20e30a00cbe8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kristen Deede Johnson Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2011"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. These histories show the development of the cities and how their histories have played a big part in shaping how things are today. After probing the history of the area I take a theological and exegetical look at the idea of reconciliation, as engaged in the Bible and the work of practitioners and scholars. The thesis then focuses on interviews I conducted, using the research method of Narrative Inquiry, with people that live in the communities of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, and, more specifically, people from Union Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church and Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ. Using these two congregations as a baseline for study, I interviewed a cross-section of both churches. The Narrative Inquiry approach helped me to identify similarities that existed between the two congregations. After the interviews were concluded they were analyzed and then presented to the participants from the two congregations for review. As I engaged the participants in this time of reflection I explored how future conversations or collaboration in the area of reconciliation might be beneficial to all parties concerned. I believe relationships were established through this project and that this was a measurable response in my thesis. By this measure, my project was very successful. Before this project I had little to no contact with my neighbors. Now I have a place to start and build upon as I look to the future of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor with a great deal of hope and passion. My final chapter is a retelling of the story of the tensions between the two cities in light of what I learned throughout the project and an anticipation of what steps we might take towards reconciliation."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1494"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135530370465792,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:52:32.516Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:54:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d6528446-d5b8-461d-8f03-ccd0ea8e3166","accessControl_ssim":["41c7bfd1-68de-42ae-bb25-07f2704995ef"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A variety of gifts : theological and pedagogical inquiry on the teaching of biblical languages"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:15:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5e81f6db-3184-4fe0-82e4-d25f66d865a2"],"hasLease_ssim":["c9b43325-e2de-4041-98ca-ca7e37a9f073"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Jean Clandinin and F. Michael Connelly's three-dimensional narrative inquiry space as a template, the author reflects theologically and pedagogically upon twenty years' experience with biblical languages at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan. The theological emphases focus upon the theology of the learner, as shaped by the imago Dei of Genesis 1; the theology of the teacher, as embodied in Corinthians 9; and the theology of learning, as envisioned in 1 Corinthians 12.The pedagogical focus critiques the efficacy of Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences and the practicality of Randall Buth's listening comprehension approach to learning biblical languages. Buth's work builds upon the conclusions of second-language acquisition theorists and teachers Stephen Krashen, James Asher, and Harris Winitz. The author concludes that the work of both Gardner and Buth must be expanded to serve the theological goals of Western Theological Seminary. Gardner' s multiple intelligences theory can shape both how one learns and what one learns. Its aim is to help the spiritually curious, newcomers, and regular church attenders develop a more informed understanding of the Christian faith, particularly through the lens of the Reformed Church in America (RCA). My research for this paper began at Marble Collegiate Church (RCA) in Manhattan—a large, urban church context. In the summer of 2011, I began my ministry as a solo pastor at The Community Reformed Church (CRC) at Manhasset, NY, a small, suburban congregation just outside of New York City. Herman Bavinck shares this deep conviction as he writes, “Good theology puts this knowledge of God on public display. It resists allowing theology to degenerate into rhetoric, a theology merely of words; it seeks the heart of the matter, knowing God in order to worship him, love him, and serve him.” He continues by writing, “Such theology is never a dry and academic exercise; it is eminently practical and superlatively fruitful for life.” As he eloquently suggests, good theology is always both practical and fruitful. That means that good theology is always given expression in practices that foster a deep love for God and a meaningful experience of his love and grace. One practice that is both deeply theological and spiritually formative is prayer. The practice of prayer is one of the primary expressions of the spiritual life, and prayer is also an integral component of our spiritual formation and our transformation. When reflecting on prayer, David Benner writes, “Prayer would not be worthy of being called a spiritual practice if it did not play a central role in this deep inner work of transformation.” As he makes clear, prayer is an integral component of our spiritual transformation. This leads me to the conclusion that a vibrant spirit life includes the practice of prayer in its many forms."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9804"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135693337001984,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:55:07.934Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:52:28Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5706f648-ece1-441e-a3e8-e5e95dfe0370","accessControl_ssim":["6930d3d6-5d86-4727-8817-168a61d71216"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Hispanic Pentecostal ministry in greater Grand Rapids : balancing calling and training toward a sustainable and healthy ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:41:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["91381ca3-829c-4cac-95c6-62a2b84b758f"],"hasLease_ssim":["df04f9b2-1b67-498d-bb5f-5484ed7c13cb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Alvin Padilla Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2020"],"location_tesim":["Michigan"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. While they offer a welcoming and familiar community to migrating families, there seems to be a disconnect with the context in which they are serving. Pastors and leaders of these immigrant congregations face real challenges: from limitations with the English language to lack of true access to resources and opportunities, from disconnection with local government officials and other agencies to the necessary skill sets to properly engage and impact their communities. It has been my observation throughout the years involved with Hispanic Pentecostal congregations in Greater Grand Rapids, Michigan, the tremendous amount of work devoted to reaching out and ministering to those migrating to our communities from over twenty Spanish speaking countries of the American continent. If these pastors of the fastest-growing religious tradition and the fastest-growing minority group in Western Michigan are making such an impact for the kingdom, I imagine the greater work they’d be able to do when they become better equipped and trained on unfamiliar yet significant educational programs.I have interviewed 10 Hispanic Pentecostal pastors that participated in a two-year certificate program and discovered how this training enhanced their ministries, prepared them to serve their communities better, and experienced the power of collaborative efforts. Their confidence level raised and positioned them to embrace other opportunities and seek continued education.I have concluded that when barriers are removed and true access is available, Hispanic Pentecostal pastors will embrace education because they understand the power of knowledge and training. Also, institutions should rethink curriculums, methodologies, and hospitality to better adapt to these pastors’ needs and to make it possible for them to stay engaged. Both academic institutions and Hispanic Pentecostal leaders ought to move more toward each other."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9327"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135528401240065,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:52:30.639Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:53:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7e800068-919f-4d03-863b-1a4ec8d4b518","accessControl_ssim":["86bf385a-dc15-4523-bfb0-f84672e7b0e1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Confluence of care and mission in congregational systems"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:51:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["03ae2993-af59-4316-8adf-79d7e2ba2688"],"hasLease_ssim":["3ff21fff-3917-4673-b673-c7c4307ae4fd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Alvin Padilla Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2020"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. In both Canada and the United States of America, congregations have engaged the kingdom in a myriad of ways through five broad primary areas of ministry: faith formation, global mission, gospel presentation and worship, mercy and justice, and servant leadership. Along the road of this long history of ministry, a need was recognized to provide a denominational program to face an increasing number of problems arising between some pastors and their congregations. This project explores how a congregation’s self-understanding is shaped by stories they tell and live. The context for this project was my ministry leadership in three Mennonite congregations during pastor transitions. I started the project by researching ecclesiological themes of importance to these congregations: sixteenth-century Anabaptism, missional ecclesiology, and narrative theology. I crafted and implemented a process of engagement utilizing these themes allowing congregations to take steps toward discovering identity, purpose, and a hopeful future. I conducted ethnographic research and facilitated congregational interaction with their stories, ecclesiological themes, and the defining narrative of scripture. This resulted in a narrative summary, written identity, and purpose statement for each congregation. The outcome of this narrative approach for ecclesiological understanding is seen in the clear, hope-filled identity and purpose statements developed by these three Mennonite congregations."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9331"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135600207724544,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:39.118Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:21Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:53:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6ee21557-4f3f-4e53-84fb-dcb72367e7cd","accessControl_ssim":["b7ee8427-5ba9-49dd-b3c8-b1336edaea6d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An inward-outward witness : suffering's role in forming faithful preachers"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:19Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:22:49Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["55894786-b03a-47b3-a63b-4d32afeff1fd"],"hasLease_ssim":["a05c6efa-b811-4f91-987e-0435c3508190"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Chuck DeGroat Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2020"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Preachers who have endured life’s deeper dramas and dark nights of the soul are potentially able to better identify with the biblical narrative and then relate that narrative to communities of hurting people, especially in an epoch when escapism and denial toward hardship are becoming increasingly normative. This is not to suggest that while walking the pathway of faithfulness, the devout preacher must embark upon a reconnaissance mission to locate suffering. Rather, since suffering is both universal and specific to the Christian life, those shepherding God’s people must adequately embrace and harness suffering to present hearers with the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135574173679616,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:14.291Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
