A massive media shift, comparable to the dawn of the printing press, has been changing cultures worldwide for over adecade. While resources regarding media ecology are increasingly available—as are resourcesdealing with expository preaching and culture—preachers lack resources for expositing thescriptures in a digital age, with its shifting epistemologies. The purpose of this study is toexamine how preachers navigate the challenges of expositing the scriptures to digitally saturatedcongregants.Four research questions guided this qualitative study: 1. In what ways do pastors describethe effects of digital saturation on the lives of their congregants? 2. What challenges do pastorsexperience in intentionally preaching expositionally to engage their digitally saturatedcongregants? 3. What opportunities do pastors experience in intentionally preachingexpositionally to engage their digitally saturated congregants? 4. What strategies do pastorsemploy in meeting the challenges posed by intentionally preaching expositionally to engage theirdigitally saturated congregants? The findings of the study show that the current media ecology has shifted indemonstrable ways from that of the print age, giving way to emerging epistemologies. This studyalso reveals valid concerns regarding the emerging digital ecology and the church’s vital need tobetter understand these epistemologies. For preachers in Reformed circles who believe that application in preaching is a fundamental requirement, there is a key challenge: how to bring together biblical-theological method with practical exhortations to hearers in a sermon. In homiletics literature this challenge has been both acknowledged and described. The negative effects of this challenge have also been described. Furthermore, a significant amount of literature exists on how to generate application in sermons. Little literature exists however, that describes the nature of the problem itself and its possible causes. This study used a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with five preachers from several denominations, varied preaching contexts and extensive experience who were committed to using a biblical-theological method in their sermon preparation and who knew the challenged outlined above as a practical reality. The literature review and constant-comparative analysis of the five interviews focused on narrative and ethics, Old Testament narrative and Christian ethics and the issues and limitations of biblical theological schemas. This study concluded that there are three primary sources of the challenge outlined above: the nature of Old Testament narrative itself as sophisticated literature, the limitations inherent in biblical theological schemas when applied to sophisticated literature, and the subjugation of the text by the preacher. To successfully address this challenge in practice, this study identified several commitments necessary for the preacher to make."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["http://covenantlibrary.org/etd/2019/Dykes_Jonathan_DMin_2019.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131505909563392,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:48:34.491Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:10:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:40:39Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"75a2ecb5-fa17-4925-8db4-0fed1e5d4c59","accessControl_ssim":["9bbecac2-591d-410e-b0af-d6a5402da283"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Diversity for the Rest of Us: Pursuing the Imperative Beauty and Benefits of Koinonia in Christ between Mono-Ethnic Anglo- and African-American Churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:10:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:35:16Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fc8ee062-d2f7-473f-a516-30891f4bf361"],"hasLease_ssim":["8cee36fd-2bb4-4482-9b8d-2e5e35851b15"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Thurman Williams"],"year_tesim":["2019"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Doctor, Craig"],"subject_tesim":["African American churches","Race relations--Religious aspects","Communities--Religious aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In light of the chronic segregated state of the church—alongside the compelling biblical impetuses toward diversity, pastors’ related convictions and aims, and the formidable challenges they face along the way—the purpose of this study was to explore how pastors of mono-ethnic Anglo- and African-American churches lead their congregants to pursue koinonia with congregants of churches of the other ethnicity—either as a preliminary step in the process of becoming more diverse, or even while expecting to remain mono-ethnic (in situations where a church’s mono-ethnicity accurately reflects its context). This study took place in Ethiopia and explored the perceptions of the Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church (EKHC) leaders’ advice to ensure a biblically based and contextually appropriate leadership transition strategy in the EKHC head office regarding predecessors and successors. It attempted to answer what these leaders perceive will ensure biblically and contextually appropriate leadership transition strategies. The study used the qualitative research design of in-depth interviews with twenty respondents (10 predecessors and 10 successors) who were purposefully selected from EKHC leadership constituents. The findings showed that the following aspects are vital for the smooth leadership transitions within the EKHC Head Office: (1) succession plan, (2) developing potential or tomorrow’s leaders through mentoring and coaching, (3) an attitude of Christlike humility, (4) election season events, (5) discipleship, (6) appreciative culture, and (7) relationship gaps.Furthermore, based on the findings, implications were found for practical application in smoothening leadership transitions: (1) introducing and developing a succession plan, (2) developing leaders through mentoring and coaching, (3) building an attitude of Christlike humility in predecessors and successors, (4) improving election season events, (5) cultivating discipleship in the lives of leaders, (6) nurturing an appreciative culture, and (7) building relationship in order to make leadership transitions healthy."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130560250249216,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:33:32.641Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:42:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e6cb142a-cc63-4c83-9d28-630756dafe29","accessControl_ssim":["94a23962-a6e0-4622-9fd7-990d6e09be96"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Understanding Modern-Day Christian Immigrant Women's Stories through the Book of Ruth"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:43:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7632c5be-b75c-41cc-a650-f2e181f46cc5"],"hasLease_ssim":["1b32aa6a-aa20-45e8-b8dc-6929e08e8cb1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Michael Pocock D.Miss.","Brenda S. The Book of Ruth served as a biblico-historical lens to help analyze the participants’ experiences with immigration as believers in Christ, and to answer three main research questions: (1) Are immigrant Christian women aware of the connection their experience with immigration has with the book of Ruth? (2) What common experiences do these immigrant Christian women share? (3) How does their faith in God inform their experience with immigration? To collect data, in-depth interviews were conducted and recorded using a phenomenological approach with twelve self-identified evangelical Christian immigrant women. Data analysis revealed that only two participants are aware of the connection their experience with immigration has with the book of Ruth, albeit the connections these participants drew vary in focus and interpretation. Regarding common experiences, participants reported experiencing a sense of loss not only of culture, family, and identity, but also of their marriages and loved ones. In many instances, experiencing loss in their lives led them to develop a deeper understanding of God’s attributes such as His power, care, protection, and forgiveness. Data also revealed that when facing hardship, most participants were able to bounce back and become somewhat resilient. An unexpected finding, however, was that almost half of the participants mentioned experiences with abuse typically, but not always, perpetrated by male figures. Data also showed that participants’ experience with immigration seem to be informed by their respective theological traditions. Implications of this study are that there is a need for better pastoral care for immigrants to help both men and women to deal with their stories of trauma and abuse, and the Book of Ruth can be an instrument to help address these needs."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131131149549568,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:42:37.093Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:18:09Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2935e466-52d8-4e3f-86c6-773256419eb7","accessControl_ssim":["02fdeb5a-05cf-4140-bf33-fc7d43c75a20"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A Phenomenology of Practicing Dignified Dialogue on Denver Seminary Students' Perceptions of Biblical Mutuality"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:20:12Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["db4d9766-c157-4c6a-ab73-625ff64fe618"],"hasLease_ssim":["e5e8adf5-2454-4a2f-9abd-db8a260ca535"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Leadership in Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Denver Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Marshall Shelley D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The goal was to explore the role, significance, and potential value of practicing dignified dialogue with other Christians as a way to negotiate divergent theological perspectives in order to determine, in part, how the exchange of ideas via dialogue might broaden understanding and even rightfully further consideration of the subject. A phenomenological research method was employed to discover the lived experiences of Denver Seminary students who practiced dignified dialogue in group studies around the topic of biblical mutuality for ten weeks. Participants’ collective experiences revealed that though participating in dignified dialogue was a difficult, thought-provoking, and tumultuous practice, it was a necessary skill to further develop as it is an essential component of shared humanity . The study affirmed the importance of dignified dialogue as a way to navigate conflict among Christians for the purpose of growing in Christlikeness, modeling unity among diversity, and sharing God’s reconciling love with a broken world."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Denver Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7af129f-938f-4821-9463-dc6ded35d563"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133371019034624,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:18:13.198Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
