The author deals with the following issues: (1) The legitimacy of such dialog in the context of urban ministry, (2) the theological conception underlying such dialog (Paul Tillich's 'method of correlation,' and Douglas John Hall's conception of a contextualized theology), and (3) examples of such dialog that begins with novels of Philip Roth, Paul Auster, and John Updike. The author describes the reactions of a study group to whom he presented his ideas and whose participants consisted of active church members and church leaders (The Montreat study group). He also describes and analyzes the responses of ten secular persons--Germans and Americans--whom he asked to fill out a questionnaire (The Questionnaire). Finally, the author develops guidelines for a dialog-oriented, contextualized urban ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126798294056960,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:33:44.959Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:56:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:09:48Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"eed96047-daf8-4452-8bb8-b7eb34572fd6","accessControl_ssim":["8965a9c4-0465-4a46-8798-d0f2f3c2c490"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Sharing story -- recovering community: a process for discovering identity and purpose for small congregation churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:55:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:57:08Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["01460ff8-6b54-417a-a1b4-07f019dd5d80"],"hasLease_ssim":["a31735ba-f26c-4f26-9f64-863ec9910383"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["James C Logan"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. A wide range of artistic media was introduced into the worship, education and spiritual formation activities of the Gateway Christian Church, of Los Angeles, California. These media included the visual arts, drama, photography and multimedia presentations. The impact of the arts was evaluated through questionnaires, personal interviews and direct observations. Spiritual formation, as measured by increased hospitality and inclusiveness, was positively impacted by the project. Originally the thesis question was: what wisdom can be learned from the ways the United Methodist Church and the Episcopal Church have engaged in debates and made decisions relating to the ordination of women and the ordination of gay and lesbian persons and the interactions of the respective denominations with their global partners? However, as this study has unfolded it became clear that the first question to be addressed is that of how our denominations, in the context of our histories, the social issues and ecclesial issues that have and continue to shape our lives, can come together as we seek to become transformed communities. Therefore this study explores a theological understanding of the democratic polities of the United Methodist Church and the Episcopal Church and reflects on our movement towards 'life together'."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799714867312066560,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:37:25.809Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:54:34Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:08:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e8a4800a-3671-4999-b658-ef314991de65","accessControl_ssim":["d62af322-4f38-4f6f-a367-835b39eae90b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Worship as pastoral care: the recovery of the shout in the 21st century middle-class black church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:54:33Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:47:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0edef078-f664-43d8-a44d-81e82aad05b3"],"hasLease_ssim":["f557e1a5-8c09-45e2-953b-45a78d952981"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["William B McClain"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The downside of this newfound affluence and status-consciousness is that a key component of why we gather together to worship has been lost. For blacks worship is a corporate act of pastoral care. Because of the subjugation and disenfranchisement of the race black Americans still need to 'shout' in church. There is peril in restricting the natural emotive range of expression in the worship setting. Whether the 'shout' be at full voice, a whisper, or a tear, Black people must be free to lament and rejoice in worship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720610372255744,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:08:42.819Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
