This study investigates the potential of a community-based, integrative approach—specifically missional communities (MCs) adopting a holistic body-mind-spirit-communal relationship (BMSC) framework—to\r\nsupport sustainable recovery. Drawing on twenty years of experience in addiction treatment, the researcher examines how MCs facilitate transformation across multiple stages of recovery, helping individuals once deemed incurable develop a renewed identity as disciples of Jesus and\r\nintegrate into Christian communities and church life. The study addresses why many recovering individuals struggle to permanently abandon prior\r\naddictive behaviors, and explores the spiritual, communal, and psychosocial mechanisms that support lasting change. Guided by mixed-methods research, including qualitative interviews and quantitative measures, the study evaluates the impact of BMSC-based MCs on participants’ holistic recovery, participation in Christian communities and church, relationship with God, and commitment to discipleship. The findings aim to produce an evidence-based addiction recovery that provides practical guidance for pastors, counselors, social workers, and helpers, fostering holistic, spiritually grounded transformation and lifelong recovery."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"_version_":1854867658835492864,"timestamp":"2026-01-20T20:07:26.564Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2026-01-15T22:41:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2026-01-15T22:41:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ba1923ac-67a6-4cd7-9807-dc9f5c0cebda","accessControl_ssim":["7674a2c2-4f4a-440d-b300-0cea5f5bb263"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c"],"depositor_ssim":["rmendez@student.ctu.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["rmendez@student.ctu.edu"],"title_tesim":["To be known is to be loved: A call to journey alongside Latino/a communities for effective pastoral leadership"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2026-01-15T22:41:31Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2026-01-15T22:41:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f8ff6cb9-f506-4259-b037-695cc4a75be3"],"hasLease_ssim":["4f0eb379-d321-4485-a3f3-91e2861e82a9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. To be known requires respect and understanding of their communities’ pastoral needs and religious practices. Sadly, many leaders have a colonial mentality that foments stereotypes and even prejudice toward Hispanics. The only way to move beyond this mentality is to sincerely enter into relationships with Latino(a)s, and understand how they see themselves. This respectful understanding must begin with our Church leaders. Latino/as want to share their cultural and religious practices that connect them to their families and ancestors. Although the Hispanic Catholics play a vital role in the life of the Church, barriers to inclusion remain. Hispanic Catholics want to fully participate in the Church’s mission to serve the whole community. They are eager to share their gifts through collaborative service in their parishes.\r\n\r\nIn this thesis project I reveal Hispanic communities that are already present but not often seen. I introduce their religious practices to the larger community including church leaders. I focus on the religious practice called Adoración Nocturna Mexicana (Mexican Nocturnal Adoration). A practice where members of the Mexican Catholic communities spend the night in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar where, like all Catholics, they worship the true presence of Jesus Christ in the consecrated hosts reposited in the Tabernacle and exposed in the monstrance on the altar during nocturnal adoration vigil. The study shows how Hispanics have historically and are presently practicing nocturnal adoration as part of their popular religious practices. More importantly, I explore what drives them toward these religious practices. By listening to their stories, I have heard their heartfelt voices as they express their needs and desires, spiritually, socially, and emotionally. I also demonstrate how they emulate the Samaritan woman at the well (John: 4-42), and like her are moved to evangelization when they also come to the realization of being known and therefore loved by Christ. \r\n\r\nI delve into the pastoral, social, and theological dimensions of Hispanic popular Catholicism and devotional practices, referred to as Santo praxis and lo cotidiano (the everyday). \r\n\r\nThe goal is to demonstrate how popular religious devotion is forged in the historical struggles of people who are oppressed. I describe in detail the rituals promoted by Adoración Nocturna Mexicana. \r\n\r\nAnd finally, share a theological reflection of the study’s findings and a pastoral response related to the importance of intercultural competence for effective leadership and accompaniment of Hispanic communities.\r\n"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["rmendez@student.ctu.edu"],"_version_":1854424409589153792,"timestamp":"2026-01-15T22:42:11.142Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-11-13T23:18:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-11-13T23:18:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7335b2a2-1183-499d-bb35-0860641a6790","accessControl_ssim":["ac14feaa-1875-488f-91a8-0ab3da293cd3"],"depositor_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"title_tesim":["Christian student development in a postmodern world : a qualitative study on the impact a postmodern worldview (social imaginary) has on the engagement of Christian college student affairs personnel with the hearts, minds, and practices of their Gen Z students"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-11-13T23:18:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-11-13T23:18:01Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e46bd22c-cf48-40d6-8ccf-a8cf9814ea55"],"hasLease_ssim":["f8cad811-8b91-4eb8-89a3-9ac7fd147e9d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. They assent to the authority of scripture, but they have also been impacted by the undercurrents of the postmodern culture. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact a postmodern worldview (social imaginary) has on the engagement of Christian college Student Affairs/Student Development personnel with their Gen Z students, and in particular, their engagement with their students’ hearts, minds, and practices. Utilizing the book of Proverbs (representing biblical wisdom concerning young people’s hearts, minds, and practices) and the “three great untruths” of Lukianoff and Haidt found in The Coddling of the American Mind (representing postmodern “wisdom”), this study sought to gain insight into which type of wisdom was being described when Christian college Student Development personnel talked about developing the hearts, minds, and practices of their students.\r\n\r\nThis study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eight Christian College Student Development personnel from a singular CCCU (Council for Christian Colleges and Universities) institution in the Midwest. Interviews were conducted with Student Development professionals from a variety of offices within the Student Development division of that institution. The interviews were analyzed and compared in order to identify worldview categories and themes.\r\n\r\nThe introduction and literature review focused on four key areas regarding the impact of postmodernism on the engagement of Christian College Student Development personnel with the hearts, minds, and practices of their Gen Z students: the roots and impact of modernism and postmodernism on contemporary American higher education (in the introduction); the good, true, and beautiful life according to the proverbs of Solomon; the good, true, and beautiful life according to the modern social imaginary; and the good, true, and beautiful life according to the postmodern social imaginary.\r\n\r\nThe resulting analysis revealed these primary findings. First, CCSDP answered questions about living truthfully, flourishing, and doing good in the world in ways most aligned with the wisdom of Proverbs. Second, there was also significant alignment in their answers with modern and postmodern social imaginaries. This study identified which concepts in Proverbs and which concepts in the modern and postmodern social imaginaries the CCSDP were describing in their answers, as well as potential cultural reasons for those descriptions."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2024/Haase_Kathleen_DMin_2024.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1848719058728386560,"timestamp":"2025-11-13T23:18:04.560Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-11-13T23:10:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-11-13T23:12:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"16e84a18-4eb0-4c73-9f91-bb5a0af59fd5","accessControl_ssim":["42002859-965a-42d4-a63f-05d93ea7f245"],"depositor_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"title_tesim":["Dynamics of spiritual renewal : how Richard Lovelace's renewal principles have influenced a generation of reformed pastors"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-11-13T23:10:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-11-13T23:12:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a6c308d1-af24-4aa1-8ce3-c1f7bdd69a4c"],"hasLease_ssim":["78015a5b-3a1a-46fb-885c-001e2799b156"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Not many churches have a well-defined plan to promote their members’ ongoing spiritual formation. Yet many pastors in the Reformed tradition have discovered a vision for spiritual formation and renewal in the writings of Gordon-Conwell theologian Richard Lovelace. Lovelace’s Dynamics of Spiritual Life (1979) has been credited by pastors including Tim Keller (Redeemer Presbyterian, New York City) as the most influential book in their philosophy of ministry and church strategy. However, Lovelace’s work was generally theoretical and remains unknown to modern leaders. This study asks: How do pastors and leaders in the Reformed traditions, specifically between ages of 35-50, apply the renewal principles of Lovelace in the life of their churches? Further, how has Lovelace’s vision for spiritual renewal been realized in these congregations?\r\n\r\nThis study will include a review of literature focused on three key areas to understand in promoting spiritual renewal in Reformed congregations: (1) Spiritual renewal according to Richard Lovelace, particularly in the areas of prayer, community, and mission; (2) the apostle Paul’s theology of spiritual life, especially the gospel, spiritual life, regeneration, the Holy Spirit, resurrection, prayer, community, and mission; and (3) organizational and congregational culture, including how churches can promote their desired values, behaviors, and practices in congregational life.\r\n\r\nThis study utilizes a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with six pastors and leaders from various Reformed churches and ministries who are either familiar with Lovelace’s theories or have been unknowingly shaped by them. The methods of qualitative research are detailed, the process and strengths of qualitative research are discussed, and the researcher’s position and the limitations of the study are acknowledged.\r\n\r\nThe interviews focus on gaining data with four research questions: (1) How do pastors in Reformed churches describe their theology of spiritual renewal? (2) How do they promote spiritual renewal among their congregants—in terms of prayer, community, and mission? (3) How do they integrate spiritual renewal into the culture of their congregation or organization? (4) In what ways and to what extent do their views of spiritual renewal compare to Lovelace’s theories?\r\n\r\nThe study concludes with a final discussion of Lovelace’s key insights and contributions, a summary of the findings, and recommendations for promoting spiritual renewal in churches in the future. Three areas of literature review were approved in order to make this a literary dissertation rather than a standard qualitative dissertation (one area). These areas of literature review yielded abundant fruit that came to harvest in the final chapter, a study of the olah ritual in Leviticus 1 as a model for a preacher approaching a challenging text.\r\n\r\nThis study concluded that there are necessary components to approach the study of a passage to preach: utilizing preparation, investigation, and application to unearth the fullness of original context within a passage; and preaching every text with Christ as both the center and the focus in order to yield heart-transformation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://covenantlibrary.org/etd/2023/Doyle_Ryan_Christopher_DMin_2023.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1848717947202174976,"timestamp":"2025-11-13T23:00:24.526Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-09-25T13:22:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-09-25T13:25:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8b8ecc32-0bb8-4fde-9952-80d36438dcde","accessControl_ssim":["b83cc156-cdb1-4ecb-ad89-e9c4bd14f8ce"],"depositor_ssim":["eve.grant@ctsfw.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["eve.grant@ctsfw.edu"],"title_tesim":["Hospitality by closing: An evaluation of case studies in teaching closed communion"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-09-25T13:22:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-09-25T13:25:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3fefd811-76cb-4169-a03d-f7c453d4d270"],"hasLease_ssim":["91f779c6-feb7-4ada-a2e0-57812783da58"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["John T. It is hoped that this will lead to an increase in confidence in discussing the matter with those who come from denominational backgrounds which find this confessional Lutheran practice unpalatable. To this end, a study and accompanying materials will be prepared from a biblical and historical analysis of the doctrine to strengthen the resolve and comfort of those who attend the study in discussing and, if necessary, winsomely defending this teaching to their friends and family who disagree with it. Success in this matter will be measured by a combination of surveys and personal interviews with congregation members and study participants, particularly to see if the use of case studies was effective in the teaching of this doctrine. Using a mixed methods approach of in-depth interviews, small group interviews, and document analysis, the project presents data from nine pastors and twelve young adults, along with analysis from Mosaic Young Adult Initiative documents. The findings suggest formational and missional value\r\nof a place-based church collaboration in the spiritual lives of young adults. Values and practices are identified for working with young adults, strengthening church culture, and positively influencing the community. Further, the project analysis highlights possibilities for collective impact and collective formation through a place-based church collaboration, informed by a\r\nspatial-ecclesial imagination. Such a theological vision compels churches to see and work beyond their own boundaries for broader city-wide influence and deeper discipleship of young adults. This research demonstrates the benefits of a place-based approach to church partnerships, spiritual formation, and missional engagement. It also suggests prospects for complementary strategies to church planting through place-based hub planting. Lastly, it illustrates how place-based church networks may serve as mentoring ecosystems for young adult faith formation in the context of city-wide collective impact.\r\n\r\nKeywords: church, space, place, young adults, collective impact, collective formation, spatial ecclesial imagination"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"_version_":1834106209110589440,"timestamp":"2025-06-05T16:13:05.190Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-05-23T16:16:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-23T16:16:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f7a4f294-b1c4-4245-a0d4-8bb35895d530","accessControl_ssim":["8f4adb33-55a1-42e5-bc9e-c4f9bb62bbb5"],"depositor_ssim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"title_tesim":["Evangelism via Tools of Digital Communication The Benefits of Alpha Online Courses"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-05-23T16:16:27Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-23T16:16:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c9ce1b25-0c4f-4571-b4e4-27e8a12e32ab"],"hasLease_ssim":["1c9464e5-5c99-4482-b421-0d5351fa5ae9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity International University"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. During the years of the Corona Virus pandemic, numbers of digitally mediated meetings via Zoom skyrocketed. Likewise, many churches that previously conducted the Alpha Course via the in-person format made a transition to offer the Alpha Online Course. This research project has sought to understand and articulate the spiritual dynamics of an Alpha Online Course with particular attention to\r\npeople who converted to faith through the online medium. This researcher explored how a local church might spread the gospel and reach people effectively in the digital realm through interactive online meetings, and why it should consider this way of evangelism as a viable means of evangelism.\r\n\r\nIncorporating evidence from literature, Scripture, participant observation, and twenty qualitative interviews, this study argues that the Alpha Course offered via the Zoom video conference has the potential to create a social space that is equal to if not preferred to in person courses. Alpha Course Online is an effective means of evangelism. It provides the participant(s) as well as the facilitator(s) with a means to balance the degree of closeness and distance. \r\n\r\nIn contrast to in-person Alpha Courses, Alpha Online provides people an opportunity to participate in emotionally and spiritually engaging meetings. This study shows that participants adjust quickly to the digital format and in this setting may engage in discussion, expressing their thoughts clearly and handling their emotions self-responsibly without embarrassment. The Alpha Course Online allows both intimacy and privacy at the same time. It enables people to reach a deeper level of conversation more quickly than expected. Hence, Alpha Online is more than a supplement; it represents a possible solution to overcome reservations of facilitators, as well as participants regarding evangelism."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"_version_":1832928667211137024,"timestamp":"2025-05-23T16:16:33.724Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-05-16T21:53:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-16T21:53:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9e8f7857-c9e9-4b22-a650-2b7a917c7754","accessControl_ssim":["bdc02cd1-34d1-48d4-a961-508776a1602c"],"depositor_ssim":["gnorrislane@gmail.com"],"depositor_tesim":["gnorrislane@gmail.com"],"title_tesim":["Beyond Heaven and Hell: Is There a Pastorally Sensitive Way for Progressive Christian Collegiate Ministries in the UKirk Network to Do Evangelism?"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-05-16T21:53:31Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-16T21:53:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b0e6b6c3-2897-423c-bb07-3ebbc704865d"],"hasLease_ssim":["ad2351ba-a3e9-4988-a03b-7aab06c146a2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min.
