There seem to be two extremes in answer to this question. The liberal side seems to blame the system. The reason many black Americans fall behind other groups is blamed on institutional racism or something ingrained in the American system that curtail flourishing for Americans of African descent. On the other hand, most on the moderate and conservative sides do not deny the black experience through slavery and Jim Crow. Yet they emphasized that Americans of African descent can do better by practicing the same tried and true methods that made other Americans successful. The dissertation will take the view that the major source of the problems in the black community has its origin in the demise of the traditional family. Statistics, written testimony, historical fact, common sense, and a biblical Christian worldview will be used to help pinpoint and offer solutions to the problem. The family that is founded on one mother and one father who are married to each other and who respond to one another as well as their children, in the way the Bible prescribes, is the only normal family. Anything else can only be second best. When children are socialized in a loving and disciplined environment, they have the greatest probability to flourish as human beings."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131811037839360,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:53:25.485Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:48:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:20:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"effba6dc-ed15-449f-bb7a-f18f44dd692a","accessControl_ssim":["01b12020-0dae-40eb-a156-47f222207501"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Witnessing to the reality of Jesus: moving the church from the walls to the community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:48:03Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:59:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7edd842c-0f79-4221-8132-abe0b66db3e2"],"hasLease_ssim":["28651fd5-bdf0-4399-b9a6-559a0083912e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kathy L Dawson"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"location_tesim":["Florida","Florida--Miami"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Devin D Brown"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Economic conditions","Church and social problems","Social conditions","African Americans--Economic conditions","African Americans--Social conditions","City missions"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Liberty City is a predominantly low- to low-middle-income African-American community in Miami, Florida suffering from many social and economic ills. The model introduced traditional Christian ideas of faith, grace, hope, mercy and salvation into the critical issues faced by these young adults. This model permitted the sermon to address the tensions involved in the interactive forces and elements faced by these young adults. This preaching model addresses contemporary issues biblically to enable young adults to hear the call to commit their lives to the gospel of Jesus Christ. A sample group in the age range 30-35 heard four sermons developed and preached by the author. Each participant filled out a questionnaire after the sermon to measure their responses to the critical issues and Christian themes raised in the model. A dialectical sermon model formed the structure out of which the critical issues were preached to these African Americans."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31bd5819-b5a3-4928-96d5-b581f38b637b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127362921824256,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:42:43.430Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:04:20Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:50:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3ebce2a4-a1b4-44f3-8ffe-8bd9f5e9ff79","accessControl_ssim":["2af95183-bf54-47bf-83a0-2b27fc05564f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Gethsemane African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Charlotte, NC: a case study of the black church and its commitment to community action"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:04:19Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:57:10Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3640327f-501f-43cd-a989-1155b06f274b"],"hasLease_ssim":["3d1ed6f6-74e3-4796-bb4c-3178b9876907"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Howard University"],"advisor_tesim":["Clinton D McNair"],"year_tesim":["1990"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["George E Battle"],"publisher_tesim":["Howard University School of Divinity"],"subject_tesim":["African Americans--Social conditions","African Americans--Economic conditions","Gethsemene Africa Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (Charlotte, NC)","Social action"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study was conducted to show that the church must commit itself to assume an active role in education, in politics, and in human relations with its members.
