Yet there are many participants who can no longer remember as they used to, due to the onset of Alzheimer's disease or some other form of dementia. The author argues that the Lord's Supper, when it is understood and practiced in line with the Reformed theology of John Calvin and John Williamson Nevin, can be a source of life to those whose memories have begun to decline. The project involved two groups of participants that were studied and evaluated. The diagnosis included dementia and Alzheimer's disease (Group A), and depression or serious medical or neurological illnesses (Group B). This project considers the spiritual needs unique to persons with alzheimer's, and how faith communities can respond to those needs.  A framework of pastoral ministry outlined by Eugene Peterson is used to examine the ministries of three professionals working with persons with alzheimer's. The Index of General Affect was used to measure caregiver satisfaction with caregiving encounters before and after training that included bio-medical information on Alzheimer's type dementia and religious symbol re-presentation (based on Susanne Langer's theories). Contrary to expectations, satisfaction scores were high after the initial encounter and declined significantly after both types of presentation.
