The author considers the question: Is the Western understanding of spiritual formation appropriate to the majority world? Three cultural differences are compared: individualism/communalism, time/events and literate/sensate learning styles. The context is the 19th century East-West encounter of religions.  The paper focuses on the interaction between the Brahmo Samaj of India and American Unitarianism.  Its methodology is historical-phenomenological.  It concludes that Mozoomdar's visits in 1883, 1893 and 1900 as a missionary of the New Dispensation evoked considerable response in America.  His role in the Parliament of Religions in 1893 was significant and his visits helped institutionalize relations between Indian Brahmos and American Unitarians. It delineates the conditions and historical developments in Southeast Asia that triggered the recent refugee exodus, examines culture-related problems that arise when East meets West, and challenges the church to live up to its divine calling.  The thesis is that the church can best utilize its resources and minister to the largest number of refugees by working in conjunction with a resettlement agency as enabler, advocate, and friend.
