A microcomputer simulation on hunger was prepared and tested in junion high church school classes. Half the classes used a computerized simulation, half a similar noncomputer simulation.  Students and teachers evaluated the simulations.  Both groups enjoyed and appreciated the simulations.  Students were challenged to think about hunger issues.  Teachers found the computerized simulation easy to use and were willing to do other simulations. The purpose of this project is to analyze the effectiveness of food banks as a means of addressing this problem.  The writer reviews the scriptures and discovers two themes: 1) everything belongs to God, and 2) God's people are to look to the needs of others.  The writer examines current literature and discovers that poverty is tied closely to hunger.  The Westside Food Bank is used as a model of food banking.  Three other food banks in Arizona also are studied. Selected persons will attend a 90-minute session each week for ten weeks in which they will receive information on world hunger, education on the use of dietary exchange lists for diet control, and group support for personal needs and concerns.  They will be tested before and after the project for evidence of learning.  They will submit weekly progress reports on diet control.  They will experience a 24-hour fast.  They will be given recipes and other information to facilitate low-calorie, vegetarian and other diet programs.  Twelve persons participated in this project.  Generally, all persons lost weight or achieved their dietary goals. Most gained valuable insight into world hunger issues.  All persons received excellent group support. The author led fifteen persons in six seminars concerning hungry children in underdeveloped countries, justice and the world food crisis, peace and justice, systematic injustice and institutional violence, the impact of international banks and multinational corporations in the Third World, and the Christian's response to global hunger.  Two instruments measured the project's effectiveness: (1) the participants' assessment which indicated enthusiastic interest, and (2) the author's estimate of each person's involvement within the seminars. This paper provides an overview of the Souper Bowl of Caring, looks at the biblical basis for the project and examines several respected hunger programs.
