This was considered a fruitful window through which to examine the state of the peace position today.  A questionnaire was sent to 228 Brethren pastors.  One hundred seventeen responded.  The findings revealed that most congregations are not experiencing significant conflict over the position, but a majority of pastors are uncomfortable with the current status quo. A pre-test and post-test was administered on two representative groups of fifteen members of First Christian Church.  The experimental group was given four lectures on Campbell's pacifism in addition to a series of peace sermons.  The control group heard only the sermons. However, the change from a closed sect to an open church has brought changes in their understanding of a peace commitment.  This paper focuses on peace as a model of hermeneutics in the church.  The history of the church is investigated to uncover a hermeneutic.  To discover the contemporary understanding of peace, a questionnaire is mailed to 278 Brethren in Christ ministers.  The returns are compared with the historical research.  Results show strong support for a peace commitment with new understandings and applications.
