An overuse of power could lead to a negative, controlling environment where churches and people are harmed. An underuse of power could lead to a general malaise in the church: a lack of direction and passion for the Lord's work. This thesis-project was a leadership awareness study of the nature of power and authority in the role of pastoral leadership in which the biblical and theological perspectives on the issue of pastoral authority were explored. Working within the Catholic tradition the study utilizes the Whiteheads' methodology and engages charism, general chapter, and facilitation ministry in dialogue with a 'thick description' (Browning) of a multicultural general chapter.  Evidence emerges to indicate that attentiveness to the dynamism of charism through facilitation postively influenced the general chapter's through conflict to communion. Women may not be adequately prepared to assume such leadership positions.  Power and authority are important issues identified by women in pastoral ministry.  Feminist understandings of power and authority are examined from theological, historical and psychological perspectives. Principles of a feminist theory and theology of leadership are applied to case studies of women currently ministering in solo pastor, senior pastor and co-pastor positions. After presenting strict definitions of the terms 'power' and 'authority', he devotes most of the analysis of rabbinic power of the Talmudic, medieval, and modern periods from three psychological perspectives: analytical (Jungian), existential, and family systems. The project also researched the writings of the major Princeton theologians: Alexander, the Hodges, and Warfield, noting the many references they made to the elements of power encounter.  The Princetonians wrote from a Reformed and exegetical perspective.  The author concludes that the Princetonians offer much needed biblical counsel regarding power encounter.  Miracles are not denied; but, miraculous gifts are refuted for the post-apostolic church upon biblical grounds.  Great care must be taken in verifying alleged miracles. The process involved analyzing the situation of the two churches, defining a Christian understanding of power, applying this understanding in the merging of the two United Methodist churches, and recording insights from this exercise.
