The researcher reviewed biblical model of the leader/follower relationship or Moses/Joshua, Elijah/Elisha, and Jesus/the disciples. A literature review of transformational leadership and follower-focused leadership models was completed. Servant leadership, situation leadership, and redemptive leadership were examined. Followership was included to understand the emerging leader's responsibility. Three developmental timelines were considered as well. The study resulted a framework for pastors to consider in developing emerging leaders. Emerging leader development involves four areas: spiritual, personal, leadership, and ministry skills. She sought to understand hurts, and the long lasting and negative impact of hurts on individuals and the church. The research was qualitative and used surveys and interviews. Upon analyzing the data the findings were compared and contrasted. The findings revealed passive aggressive behaviors such as gossip and spreading rumors as some ways congregants handled their hurts. Hurts were used by false accusations, a failure to show compassion, and lack of commitment, which negatively impacted the ministry. A 'Life Map' is a contemporary term for a spiritual quest to make sense of one's whole life. This researcher discovered the practice with mentors who guided him through a church crisis at midlife using a Life Map. He subsequently led over fifty seminarians in construction of a Life Map as part of their preparation for ministry, observing a pattern of transformation for these adults. This project surveyed the graduates of Bethel Seminary of the East and interviewed eleven, finding solid confirmation for that hypothesis using statistical analysis and grounded theory. As secondary support for the hypothesis, he explored the theme of spiritual formation and transformation in an Old and New Testament character study. This project also surveyed research literature on a noted spiritual formation model, findings from narrative psychology, and an outline of a history of spiritual autobiography. The researcher used three data streams -- scriptural, contemporary and case studies -- to determine possible causes for homophobia in the AAC in the DMV. The data revealed that leaders acting on what they have been taught frame their ministry paradigms in ministering to LGBT people. These influences are deeply embedded into the culture of the AAC and the psyche of the AA pastor. Using a Womanist framework, the project determines how AME congregations and ecclesiastical leadership can respond appropriately to clergywomen's voices and leadership styles. Six AME senior pastors are interviewed and twelve senior pastors and other women clergy are surveyed identifying four areas of interviewed and twelve senior pastors and other women clergy are surveyed identifying four areas of disparity between female clergy and their male counterparts: the call to ministry, preparation for ministry, well being , and church status.
